Just watched the women’s cycling road race. Huge upset. Apparently the woman who won broke away unnoticed by the favorites. There are no radio communications allowed in the Olympics. So when the favorite crossed the finish line she celebrated. She had to be told somebody else had finished a minute and a half earlier.

 I had the TV on mute and didn't catch any of that commentary. I thought the woman was celebrating because she was happy to win the silver. But that may explain why I saw a shot of the winner a few minutes later and the silver medalist and her teammates were near her and didn't even acknowledge her.

They didn’t mention during the race at all. When the studio commentator came on after, she mentioned it.

OK. That's a fascinating development though

If she gets bored being a postdoctoral researcher in applied mathematics she can take up pro cycling.  That was fricking awesome - I was yelling at the TV for the last 20 km.
Austrian woman who is a free agent. No big teamhas signed her since 2017. She has money coming

Completely agree - guile and paying careful attention to other riders was a big part of road racing before radio.  This is one of the things I love about Olympic cycling.
The women's race is the best argument against radios

Drinking Sapporo beer to help with the watching.

Decided I would try and focus on one event that I don’t know much about. Team sport. Team handball has too much scoring. So field hockey it is and men’s specifically. The sticks are so short that I think they must all develop back problems. Didn’t see this one live but made me like it even more. Kind of a cross between soccer and hockey and lacrosse.

Can’t find a video that works. I believe the Argentine tells the Spaniard we are European you bastard.

Think I should have gotten the Asahi.  It's not bad though.

I tried to select something on the NBC app on my Roku the other day... it doesn't tell you that you have to be logged in to NBC, but you have to be logged in.

Watching this usa Japan water polo.  Looking like we need to call up Task Force  58 to teach these folks how it is done.

Biles’ difficulty score is so high she can make mistakes like falling off the mat and still win

I'm surprised Japan doesn't have any sumo wrestlers on the team to create huge wakes. I'd think it'd give their shootetd a big advantage to stand on solid ground

Belgium and Germany are two of the favorites in men's field hockey.  Belgium dominating so far and up 2-0 nearing the half.

if skateboard is, might as well do rugby. IIRC, Ebner from the Pats special teams was the only nfl player in the 2016 Olympics. He's one of the best USA rugby players

I think women's beach volleyball needs more scoring so the teammates can hug more when they score.

I found it - the four in red/blue are essentially the full team, the ones in red are event specialists.
