Pretty big news for all you degenerates out there (myself included) Nationals will have a sports book inside the park next year. First MLB team to do it.

Wonder how seamlessly it will integrate into in-stadium promotions, as well as the gamblers help line disclaimer.

For those without access to Twitter: https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/01/11/washington-nationals-mgm-sportsbook/ - apparently the sportsbook will be located outside the ballpark (but bets can still be placed from inside the ballpark via mobile app).

Bad news. The entire sports-betting industry is a cancer on honest games, which is why MLB has banned gambling since the Black Sox. And why MLB tossed Shoeless Joe Jackson and Pete Rose.

Integrity of the game can apparently chalked up as an acceptable loss for many of the barons of sports, especially when revenues take downturns

I'm a simple man! I really do enjoy the minimalist version of the site, though!

Agree.  The only betting should be between fans when the visiting team comes to town - or which beer in the Red Porch will sell the most on a given day.

The players make so much money that they have zero incentive to fix games. Even guys making the minimum don't have that incentive. Because if you paid them enough to make it worth it, it would necessitate bets that would be large enough that they would be easily detected.

Shoeless Joe Jackson made $32,000 in his entire career ($430,000 in 2020 dollars). That's less than the league minimum today for one year. It's too much to risk for too little reward for a modern Major League baseball player.

Now college is something completely different...

The sportsbook will make for great people watching for sure. Might finally bring a certain roughness around the edge that is currently missing from the Nats fanbase.

Great. More non-baseball fans to come to the stadium.

Since the average baseball fan is getting close to social security, that’s not a bad thing.

The in-game betting options will create strange reactions from fans.  I can see someone on the 1st base line yelling at a player for costing them $100 for not putting the ball in play or something similarly stupid.

But it's always been like that.  Those who can afford and have time to spend have always been older.  But over time, attendance hasn't gone down due to this.  Football made a dent, but it is not an impact on the age population going to baseball games.

Good point - fans interest will divert from team winning the game to other factors, such as margin of victory, events by individual players, and so on.

It's gone from 52 to 58 in the past ten years or so.

Half the fans in NFL stadiums have probably had bets going on games and you don't see any weird effects in their cheering or booing.  Seems to be an overreaction to changing times.

Fantasy football, which is increasingly just gambling, accounts for a meaningful chunk of the NFL's TV audience, right?

Exactly and MLB wants to generate that same alternative interest in the game and cash in on it at the same time.

and I'm sure in stadium betting will have fair odds and a reasonable cuts for the house. /s People will buy a $10 hotdog, I'm doubting they'll be willing to take the nats -110 to win the World Series

Agreed.
Even before the Black Sox scandal Baseball was trying to 'clean up the game.'
The initial success of the American League was based on getting gambling and hard liquor out of the stadiums.
So let's just bring the fox back into the henhouse.
