This signing would be nice if the Nats somehow were able to trade for Hendricks and Contreras, but I don't see them being able to have the prospects to do it. It would help the fire sale Cubs but I don't think the return would work.
It's funny, but even with several off years, Gomes has hit LHP very well over his career and last year. .278 / .336 / .478 career with a wRC+ of 117. He might be ideal to slot behind Soto and before Bell. Contreras would be fun, but we might have a decent current option.
The other thing to realize is just how much more righty starters hurt the offense than lefties. Ops v righty starters was .722, v. .883 v lefty starters
