When coverage began over here, in '82, Smith was the support presenter on the highlights show (no live games in those days...) to the great Frank Gifford. As this was the start of promoting the game in the UK, Smith got the nod in order to provide a 'local' connection  for the audience.

2026 would be even more interesting.

Wouldn't it be great if England, and their supporters, were based in DC for World Cup '26 - it'd be a riot.. ;)

Iiirc, in 1994 neither England nor France qualified for the world cup in the USA. I know the management was petrified of the hooligans

I seem to recall DC erected a fence around the field at the bottom of the RFK stands for that World Cup, the only US venue to do so, because then-Mayor Dixon was afraid of hooliganism.

Norway vs Mexico in '94 IIRC.  I'm sure that the Mexican ultras were terrified that Lars from Lillehammer was going to drunkenly f*ck a dover sole and throw it over the fence

We note the passing away of German goal-scoring legend Gerd Muller - one of the greatest players ever (even if his goal did knock England out of Mexico '70). :(

Sounds like security was quite lax.

To be honest (having watched the video of events) it's the only time I can think of, in major league soccer, where fans, players, managers and officals of both teams were all involved. Quite unbelievable  :(

Perhaps it's something French - Payet throwing the bottle at the fans is on a par with Cantona's infamous flying kick (against a Crystal Palace suppporter).

Throwing bottles is different from throwing sardines.

Bags?  At one (French) game the away fans (including me) were put in a ground level enclosure - above us were the home 'ultras'. As soon as the game started, they jumped up, onto the balcony wall, and started urinating on us, Such fun...(not)

Not so fast.
hope he does a sequel to LeBrons The Decision.  Flies to Manchester's airport, have representatives place two jerseys in front of him, have him give a speech about the importance of whatever, then picks up a jersey (and there's a riot on the way out of the airport and he's eaten by fans of the other team).

Close... :hysterical:

City should have appreciated the bond between Fergie and Ronaldo - it was his intervention that persuaded Ronaldo not to sign for City.

Arsenal had better start doing their homework on Stoke City and Coventry.

The problem with Arsenal is that they always try to walk it in.

Ali the Gooner?... ;)

I once met someone (through work) who coveted the Britannia Stadium (Stoke's ground), but not for soccer - he wanted to evict City and use the Britannia for large evangelical church services. Why the Brittania, in particular, and how Stoke would react to being thrown out of their own stadium was never quite explained.... :?
