I wonder if she goes to NWSL or Europe, Macario looks like she'll be the next USWNT star and she chose Lyon instead of NWSL.

Good for FCV though, St James may actually end up coming out ahead on purchasing them

I guess I would assume they get a commitment before wasting a draft pick?

I'm sure they get something, but until a contract is signed she can change her mind. Most of the women on the national team are playing premiere league now, so it doesn't make much sense from a training/development standpoint to play NWSL anymore (My older daughter and her teammates followed the spirit pretty closely and went to a bunch of games, but most are adopting premier league teams now)

Pulisic with 2 goals today. Too bad he is always hurt.  Talented fellow.

Doh!  You'd almost think that they had been knocked out of the WCQs by Panama

Saw that but not clear how it would work for their home leagues. The rich want to get richer. Not surprising.

supposedly this replaces champions league and they still compete in home leagues. Right now UEFA is threatening to ban them from any league they sanction, so that would kick them out of their home leagues.

As originally proposed, all the ESL matches would be played mid-week; the clubs would participate in their domestic leagues at the weekend (https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/14696311/liverpool-tottenham-fans-protest-european-super-league/).

That’s not going to happen. It’s a bluff. Sounds like they want their own guaranteed super league each year without letting the riff raff in.

it's probably dead in the water. European competition laws, if nothing else, probably will doom it. I think UEFA and the national leagues are serious about kicking them out and who knows what populist governments will do (the UK is already tossing out some fixes like requiring football clubs to mirror the German ownership model of 50%+1 fan ownership or denying visas to players and team officials)

I do think it's American owners who hate being left out of top leagues driving this- right now West Ham and Leicester City will have a spots in the champions league next year over 4 of the 6 teams joining this new league. European football is just a riskier investment because league slots have to be earned with performance

Euro sports are more capitalist-competitive than US sports, and the US owners want more collective action.

Sounds boring as hell.  Hard pass.  One of the best things about European footie is the giant slaying.

Once I heard Bayern, Dortmund, and PSG weren’t participating, I knew this thing was dead in the water. It was telling that no one from these clubs said one word to defend this in the last 24 hours.

This was dumb. If they wanted leverage, it’s better to keep this as a looming threat. Not announce it, see it get pilloried on all fronts and then slink away in shame.

The Euros love the idea that the little guy can win in their leagues although they never do.  It is funny to see corrupt organizations like UEFA calling out greed.  Poorly planned by those in favor.  If they had floated a trial baloon it would have showed lack of support. Also not getting the players on board was a mistake.  Back to the drawing board.

Leichester city is in the middle of a nice run. I like that euro leagues aren’t a reflection of a time when the league decided to set itself in stone. Over the long haul, teams can rise and fall. Even in the short term, owners have to care enough to at least avoid relegation

In the English league there are 6-8 teams that dominate most years and are never relegated. I suppose they are the richest. As best I can tell the other top euro leagues are each dominated by 2-3 teams.  Would be very boring for me to be a fan of the other teams.  Hope for an upset win or two of the top teams each year and to avoid relegation.  The EPL seems the champion is almost always decided a couple months before the season is over. I guess it’s what they grew up with but I like our sports leagues.

Right now man city is leading the EPL- they are a pretty recent power. West ham is battling for a champions league birth and leichester is going to get one. That’s not too bad for new blood at the top

This is true: Man City competed in the second tier of English football as recently as 2001-02. In contrast, Arsenal have been in the top flight continuously since 1919, Everton since 1954, Liverpool since 1962, ManUtd since 1975, and Chelsea since 1989.

Haven't MC been a dominant team for like ten years now. I assume they got a big influx of money to compete.

Man City are now owned by Abu Dhabi United Group - operating funds are inexhaustible. (Hence the large-scale association with Etihad Airways, which is based in Abu Dhabi.)
