Buying low as he had a big drop off in 2020. Good idea. Crowe seems no good. Not sure about the other guy we gave up.

WTF is Cherington doing? What a foolish move by Pittsburgh.

Wow .... that's actually a fairly significant haul for Josh Bell.

Honestly, that's more than I thought it would take to get Bell. He's 28. He's basically had one good half a season out of the last four seasons.

Boras client, probably gonna make about 6 million this year, free agent after the 2022 season.

Does this signal Zimmerman’s retirement?   I don’t see him returning without a starting position.

Not unless the NL adopts the DH.

Zim was always going to be a bench bat. Bell has pretty significant splits, with a much better OPS against RHP, so Zim would still slot in against LHP.

But Zim's days of being a everyday player are done.

#3-#4 starter and a bit of a lottery ticket in Yean for an MLB.  I think he lost his low A year last year, or maybe would have repeated short season.  Only turning 20 next summer.  IF you are a TINSTAAPP guy or if you think the Nats have a short window, then this sort of deal makes sense.  He's far enough away that you can't cry too much even if he turns into rotation regular in 2023.

Agreed, especially as Yean and his baseline talent sound promising

That seems like a stretch in projecting Crowe. He looked to have #8 starter type stuff last year.

I love this deal.  I wasn't impressed with Crowe as more than another Fedde/Vothesque depth piece.  Who knows with the 19 year old kid.  I think the 2019 Bell wasn't a fluke and could definitely be seen, or close to it, in the next few years.  He's 28, smack in his prime, and affordable for a few years.  Zim or another RH bat could platoon some with him.  Hopefully there's a DH and Bell can be used there mostly, and we can stick another big lefty bat at 1B.

Josh Bell is a guy who always seemed to have more talent than his numbers showed, until the 1st half of 2019 when he exploded.  I think the ceiling at 28 is still within him, and I believe the shortened 2020 isn't the true floor

After reading more the Pirates probably wanted Yean more than Crowe.  Yean seems to have some high potential.

Another way to look at it is Bell has constantly underperformed his evaluations, outside of the first half of 2019

Well .... yeah. Crowe's ceiling is probably a decent number 4. Yean could be a top of the rotation guy with the right develolment.

Bottomline is this is about as good of a move as could be made to try and remain a contender the next few years.  We don't give up anything of significance present value, we don't give up one of our very best prospects, and a hole is filled with a guy who has big upside at a discounted price, leaving money to spend on a corner bat, catcher, another SP, and a bullpen lefty.

he has a career .355 wOBA / 121 wRC+ against RHP.  Also, for what it is worth, he hit better on the road than in Pittsburgh. Just looking at 2016-2018, he's 10 - 20% better than league average vs. righties.

Zim will play his 40 or so starts vs. lefties and some pinch hitting and some defensive substitution, assuming no DH.

What is with the Pirates owner Bob Nutting? Has he ever had a winning season. It's like he doesn't care to win at all.
