Looks like he has solid tools, but I just hope he decides he wants to be a big leaguer and not go to Louisville next year.

This report is consistent with that one, but provides more details on the reasons he wasn't a first rounder, lack of arm strength and questions about his power potential.  Can't an 18 year old develop arm strength?

just saw that the last time the Nats picked position players in the first two rounds was 2005 - Zimmerman and Justin Maxwell.

As a #2 pick, you'd think the Nats have the leverage over Louisville.

Slot value is 1.5 million. If he goes to Louisville, does well, and comed out a first rounder, he would get at least a million more

Pay him that little bit more and let him develop slowly, gaining strength and whatever skills he would otherwise develop in college. Similar to Michael Brantley? That's pretty good.

Kerzel:

The third round saw the Nationals select Branden Boissiere, an outfielder from the University of Arizona who they picked as a first baseman, with the 82nd overall pick.

Boissiere slashed .369/.451/.506 with 12 doubles, four triples, five homers and 63 RBIs in his two years at Arizona. He played both first base and outfield in college, but Baseball America projects him as a plus defender at first.

Update: The Nats pivoted back to pitching in the fourth round, using the 112th overall pick to take Texas A&M left-hander Dustin Saenz. He was 6-6 with a 4.27 ERA and 1.257 WHIP in 14 starts for the Aggies last season, fanning 104 hiters in 84 1/3 innings. For his college career, Saenz is 10-7 with a 4.13 ERA in 47 games, including 23 starts.

Update II: It's back to high school hitters, as the Nationals used their fifth-round pick (No. 143 overall) on outfielder T.J. White out of Dorman High School on Roebuck, S.C. White is a swich-hitter who stands 6-foor-2 and weighs 210 lbs.

MLB Draft Tracker, with Nats picks.

https://www.mlb.com/draft/tracker/2021/all/team/nationals

TJ White, born 2003. Finally getting to young players born after the New Nationals.

Quote
White's biggest backers believe the switch-hitter has some of the best raw power among high school players in the Southeast. The Indiana recruit has a quick bat and a strong 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame. There are some questions about his pure hitting ability and his chances of staying in the outfield rather than moving to first base.

Wasn't the first Nats team 2005?

Choice is $1.58M in hand now, or ... maybe nothing near that in years to come.

I dont think I'd go that far. Hes not a freak athlete but his 60 yard dash timed where in the 93rd percentile at PG events. Not saying he's going to steal a ton of bases or anything but he's not some lumbering, unathletic kid out there. An average athlete is still good enough to he a big league outfielder, especially if he csn cover a little ground. I dont think there are any concerns about him playing the OF.

That's what I was going to say. Sure, there's always the chance to improve your stock. But you can also damage it as well. Fall out of the top 5 rounds, and you've lost a mill. Not to mention, by starting your career 3 years early, you may be further up the organizational ladder come June/July '24, and that much closer to the bigs.

I saw Nick Johnson with the Yankees. A fine hitter and tough to get out. Victim of Steinbrenner impatience ("Lets sign Giambi! Who needs Tino and Johnson?"). I wish New Nationals fans had gotten more of a chance to watch Johnson.

If the new kid is another Nick Johnson, then sign him yesterday.

If he can find a way to develop power, maybe. While Nick Johnson wasn't a major power guy, he was hitting double digit bombs as a teenager in the minors with a wood bat. Boissiere just hit 5 with an aluminum bat at 21. There are real power concerns, although he does have a good eye at the plate and can put the ball in play. Hopefully they find a way to get more power while keeping the contact and walk rates the same.

Apparently not since he was passed over by several teams.  Of course we know some of those teams are thrifty.

Kind of love this draft. Lots of left handed power added, relievers who should make it to the pros and middle infield players. Such a nice change from college righty after college righty
