Rule 5 Day in 1962:
« Topic Start: November 26, 2020, 04:25:26 PM »
Passing this along from Jim Casey, at the Facebook site for the Expansion Senators.

"Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Hope it's a safe and joyful day for all. In Expansion Nats history, today was the Rule 5 draft in 1962. The Nats picked up our friend and member Jim Duckworth from the Reds, Brant Alyea also from the Reds, and Lou Piniella from the Indians."

Oh so many of us kids from the 1960's remember Jim Duckworth and Brant Alyea, but how many here remember that Sweet Lou Pinella was as a Nat?

Sweet Lou was my cart-mate at a charity golf tournament in Florida in the mid/late '90's.  I was pissed because I got paired with Lou instead of my old White Sox manager and '59 AL Champion Al Lopez, who was in the foursome in front of us...

I won the grand prize at the post tourney raffle and played a round with 2 friends at the exclusive Black Diamond golf course outside of Tampa later that year.  My cart-mate/club ambassador was Bo Belinsky...

Bo Belinsky.  Did you ask him if all the stories were true.

The only reason I knew that Lou Piniella was once a Nat is that he was one on his 1964 Topps rookie card.

Being curious, I looked it up, Pinella hit .300 for the New Senators Class A team in 1963, so, smart organization that they were, they traded Pinella to Baltimore for Buster Narum, a pitcher. I remember Buster Narum, or, at least the name.

I remember that Duckworth had serious fear of flying and even refused to fly several times.  I don't recall how the team dealt with that.  I recall he was Native American ("Indian" as they said back then).

I do recall Pinella playing for the Senators, in spring training (never during the season).

Cause he never played for them during the season.
