I saw this article and figured this might be a good thread to park it.  Thoughts?  Washington AAA affiliate in Richmond???

I read a rumor on another thread about Washington possibly absorbing the Frederick Keys, then I came across the article below.  I think it is just a hopeful fan rambling, and it wouldn't seem to make sense for the Nats to have 2 High-A affiliates, but nothing else this year seems to make sense.  Any thoughts??

I think Frederick would possibly bump down a level.  The newer stadium with the longer relationship would probably stay in A+.

Interesting. It could work, and potentially save a local team.  Man, the 2021 Minor League season is going to be interesting.

MLB and its agreement with the Minors (MILB) expired on 09/30/2020. MLB is realigning and reconfiguring the minors. They are expected to have 120 minor league teams starting in 2021. In 2019, there had been 162. So, roughly, 42 teams getting the boot - or maybe 45 as it seems that there are 3 teams being purchased from the independent leagues (Somerset, NJ, St. Paul, MN and Sugarland, TX). MLB has not announced even what leagues will be returning. I've read that MLB will unveil its plan on Dec 1st.

Frederick was on a list floated earlier of teams getting the boot.

There are expected to be 4 levels: AAA, AA, High A and Low A.

This is up to date with what I have seen announced so far. I have not included minor league teams owned by their MLB partner.

As has been suggested elsewhere, I think the only boot Fredericksburg would get would be to low-A. It showed its value as the alternate site this year with the new park, and the distance cannot be beat for organizational purposes.

MLB announces a six-team "Pioneer" league, mostly formed out of the NY Penn League short-season.

Instead of housing recently-drafted players, second-year pros beginning the climb toward the major leagues or, in Trenton's case, nearly big-league ready propects, the draft league teams will instead feature draft-eligible high school and collegiate players in a 68-game season that will pause in July for MLB’s draft, which has been moved back one month.

That's going to get awkward if some players either rise or fall relative to teammates or some players expecting to get drafted don't (which is a real possibility with the shortened draft)

Ballpark Digest has been tracking the changes and rumors.  They now hint that at Wilmington as an affiliate.  I'd guess High-A, so Low-A for Fredericksburg.

They also suggest that Frederick may be safe, and may end up as the O's AA affiliate, with Aberdeen at High-A and Delmarva at Low-A.  Could be bad news for Bowie.

Interesting. I would think Fredsburg would be unhappy about building a stadium for a Low A team.

Wilmington?  Who in Washington would follow Wilmington?

:couch:

Just kidding.  How do Wilmington and Frederick compare as stadiums?  Wilmington is a much larger city, so you'd think AA for the O's and Frederick as Low A for the Nats would make some sense, especially with Frederick's proximity to Hagerstown.  Even Frederick as the Nats High A and F-burg as Low A makes some sense since Frederick is close to Harrisburg.  Geographically, this would align Delaware and the Bay with the Os, and VA and west and south of DC with the Nats.

Especially since it's basically a suburb of Philly.

Both stadiums are of the early 90s variety. I haven’t been in the Wilmington stadium, which appears to be downtownish (I normally like going to my league stadiums within a day drive, but their Baltimore-riffic crime numbers as disincentivized night games, and 95 is such a zoo on the weekends). I’ve seen it from an Amtrak jaunt (passes close enough that you can partially see inside the stadium) and it looks fine; looks like it’s right off of 95. This article mentions recent upgrades:

Frederick’s is like most of those of that era with the open sightlines from the concourse, and it’s very near 270 and 70. Good atmosphere, I remember decent attendance when I’ve been there. (They shake keys during rallies.) i’m a little surprised that Bowie — which came along around the same time — hasn’t surfaced in any of the discussions.

Have driven past the Wilmington stadium but never been in it. It’s close to 95. I assume one could make it in and out without being robbed.
