Nick Markakis announces his retirement after 15 years. Every time I read his name, I hear it in Gary Thorne's voice.

While I always respected Markakis as a player I was never a fan of Gary Thorne. That basso profundo voice of his just isn't suitable to baseball listening enjoyment IMHO.

I'm a huge Thorne fan.  He could read a phone book and I'd listen.

It's funny but the Os  have had some great announcers.  I liked Fred Manfra, and of course there was Jon Miller.  Palmer is still himself, but when he's not talking about himself he's pretty good too.

I know I've told this story before, so I'll keep it short...

I beat Palmer to the counter for last call on the last first class upgrade on a flight from Atlanta to somewhere else.  Ya snooze ya lose...

He didn't exactly use these words with the gate agent, but he pulled the "Do you know who I am?" attitude.  Pretty sure I got stink eye as he slithered back to coach...

Lebron is now part owner of the Red Sawx.  Just another reason to hate them.

Isn't Billy Beane in that group, too?

This values FSG properties at about $8 billion (since $750 MM for a 10% minority position is a bit of a discount).  That's Red Sox, Liverpool, the Fenway real estate, Roush Fenway Racing, and some ancillary businesses like I think the agency that handles ACC alumni travel. Does not include the Boston Globe, which Henry owns personally.  I saw a breakdown on SoSH by one member that pegged the Sox as $4BB plus, and Liverpool about 2/3 of the rest.

I believe that the Beane/Sox deal fell through

It helps pay for the habit if you can sell some on the side.

How not to GM:

Jayson Stark:
Quote
"In more than 6 years running the team, the Rockies GM has committed more than $300M in salary to 19 free agents on major-league deals. Those 19 free agents have collectively accounted for -3.4 wins above replacement while with the Rockies."

Desmond has to account for a lot of that I'd think?

Mike Bell, the Twins’ bench coach, has died from kidney cancer. He was just 46.
