Tatis signs a 14 year / $340 million extension according to Passan.

Rizzo needs to offer that to Soto tomorrow.

buys out 4 years of team control and 10 years of free agency, valuing the FA years at about $30MM per year.

Quote
Our own Mike Axisa recently pegged Tatis as a strong candidate for an extension. Here's what he wrote at the time:

"The best benchmark at this service-time level is Alex Bregman, who signed a six-year extension worth $100.6 million with the Astros in March 2019. A six-year deal would buy out Tatis' four remaining years of team control plus two free agent years, and allow him to become a free agent at age 27. That contract values Bregman's free agent years at $30.5 million apiece. If we stick with that and turn the six-year deal into a 15-year deal, we're talking $375 million in guaranteed money. It's very possible Tatis could receive a $400 million extension in the not-too-distant future."

As it turned out, Tatis basically hit that mark, albeit for 14 years instead of 15, hence the slightly lower overall value. Tatis' $340 million extension once finalized will become the largest in Padres' franchise history, breaking the record set by Tatis' fellow member of the left side of the infield Manny Machado ($300 million). It will also become the third-largest contract in MLB history in terms of total value behind just Mike Trout's and Mookie Betts' current deals. At 14 years, Tatis' extension is the longest contract, which breaks the record of 13 years shared by Giancarlo Stanton and Bryce Harper.

Comparable for Soto at this point might 13 years, $335MM, because Soto is already in arb as a Super 2.

He probably talks to the players like once a year. He must have been drinking when he made that presentation.

There was some unspoken truth in what he said about manipulating service time.

Well for sure it’s his last year. His contract is up and he is 41 and not hood anymore.

Definitely said the quiet part out loud.

Still, can't be saying that.  It would be like a manager/coach admitting to making a pitcher throw at someone.

This might not be the most popular view, but he might be in the wrong job.  Same for Martinez.  Heart problems and frequent acute stress aren't a good mix.  Obviously they get to make their own choices, but from a human perspective one does worry.

The Mets are moving in on Maikel Franco since Jose Martinez tore his meniscus during the Nats game.

I read this yesterday.  So not sure the likelihood.  Franco is a 3B who might also play a little 1B.  So not a replacement for Martinez.  They already have Davis at 3B.  Not sure Franco is much of a replacement for Davis.

Nick Markakis announces his retirement after 15 years. Every time I read his name, I hear it in Gary Thorne's voice.

do you remember when Markakis and Zimmerman were both thought to be bargain long-term signings back when they were both close to free agency for the first time?
