Darvish tweeted he found out about trade like we all did, with no one personally calling to tell him. He sounds displeased.

How could anyone be upset with being sent from Chicago to San Diego?

So the Padres added Blake Snell and Yu Darvish to their rotation, and they still have McKenzie Gore and CJ Abrams

Hello Dodgers.

The guys the Cubs got from the Padres were going to be ranked 15, 17, 18, and 20 in the Padres system in the next edition of the prospect rankings.

Hell of a day to be a Padres fan.

Sure, but Davies had a lot of value.  It's a decent deal for the Cubs considering Darvish's contract and how unlikely he is to repeat 2020 next year.

Davies is a number 4 starter at best. This was a salary dump

He's an ok 3 or a strong 4 in my book - the numbers are there.  Either way, he's a serviceable MLB starter who's neither old nor expensive (and if the Cubs flop, is a trade chip himself).  It's a pretty efficient salary dump that also doesn't leave nearly as big a hole as it would without Davies in it.  The Central is awful and the Cubs might still win it even with this trade.

It's a sell-high on Darvish as well.  IIRC he's been elite since the ASB in 2019, but not so great, and injury prone, before then.

I'm still surprised both that the Cubs dumped Darvish and that that's the best offer they got for him. I guess the key to understanding this is his age. Apparently neither the Cubs GM nor other GMs across the league value a 35 year old pitcher all that much, even if he's coming off a near Cy Young season.

I think she is coaching in MiLB, but she is still a first.

Just a matter of time.

It's his contract.  He'll be 35 in the middle of next season and is owed ~$60 million through the season he turns 37, plus he had Tommy John almost 6 years ago and is coming off a career year.  That career year is the only reason that contract was tradeable at all.

It's not even a full year. He's been good since the 2019 ASB.

The thing is, Darvish has the repitore to pitch well without relying on velocity. The big issue is health for him. But he could easily become like Grienke, and be effective with low 90s

A useful outfielder off of a good season, Robbie Grossman, is also off the table.  Signs with the Tigers

Pine Tar Gate.

I watched this video the other day.

They make a pretty compelling case that this is a real thing, it's very effective in generating spin rate, and widespread.   Also that some guys have access to better substances than others.

Bauer denied using foreign substances yesterday and retweeted his Tweets on this subject.

There's another thread on this BTW, and definitely deserves its own thread - this is going to be big.
