They can't go into a rebuild in year 3 of Bryce, but also have a bad team and few prospects. I expect him to try to load them up again but that's all they've been doing recently so should be more of the same.

IIRC, Harper has a no-trade clause. But if they are going into a rebuild I wonder if he'd want out.

They will do whatever the owner wants.  The will call it something other than a rebuild.  How about rightsizing?

He's in  pickle.  Only a couple of teams could possibly take on his contract.  And they don't want him.

He’s an idiot. He should have built in some opt-outs and taken a bit less money. Or he should have taken the more money for less years the Dodgers offered him. Especially with his agent.

But he wanted so badly to have the highest total contract number.  Which is dumb.

This. Unless he's trading, Nola, he ain't rebuilding crap. You don't bring in Dombrowski to rebuild a franchise. You bring him in because you want to win now.

Dombrowski is being brought in as President of Baseball Operations. To rebuild the organization. Which by definition means he is not being hired not just for short term moves.

Can’t read the whole article but have seen some quotes beyond the first two paragraphs. He’s being brought in to redo the organization.

:smh:  dombrowski will spend, consistent with the owner's intention when he bought the team. He will also acquire expensive players from tight.money teams or fire sales. Because the intent is to contend quickly, he will trade what prospects and cheap lineup assets that are around for upgrades.  He doesn't sell prime vets for prospects until the window has closed.

Doesn’t he leave organizations in worse shape than when he joined them? Why do teams keep hiring him?

Because he puts teams in the World Series, and won a couple.

Meh, I think he’s past his expiration date. He left the Sox in tatters.

Wasn’t really true in his earlier jobs. He built a good farm system and team in Montreal until being forced to sell the players off. He won with the Marlins and then sold off players as the owner wanted. The nucleus of the new team he built after that won the World Series just after he left. He inherited a Detroit team that was coming off  118 loss season I believe. And built them into a contender for a decade. He did leave them in bad shape but he left there 5 years ago and I guess some Tigers fans are still blaming him for their current shape.  Seems a bit much. He did go big risk with the Sawx.  However they did win another World Series. That would seem to count for something.

He’s President of Baseball Operations so his job is to build an organization that can compete over the long haul.  Also he has a nice haircut and a year round tan. That should count for something also.

They just don’t have the prospects at this point to trade. They would have to trade Nola or Wheeler or Bohm. That doesn’t help. He is being brought on to retool the organization including drafting, player development and use of analytics. Basically to undo what MacFAIL and Klentak did the past few years. His legacy is enough that he is a cinch for the HOF at soem point in time. So he doesn’t have to build a contender in a year or two to cement his legacy.

I agree with you.  I'm just saying why folks would still bring him in.  I think buyer beware / know what you are getting.  I think Dombrowski is why Mookie is a Dodger.

so . . . if not Realmuto, then try for a guy who can split time, play some d, and don't overpay.  Jason Castro, Curt Casali, I guess.  Hope for an offensive bounce back, but be satisfied with OK or better defense?  Tyler Flowers?

At this point, the Nats will need that money elsewhere. They can roll with Israel Pineda or another JAG. And the Lerners are probably playing up financial woes, and will likely push hard on deferred money, which makes it difficult to sign free agents.

We'll probably overpay for Ozuna, and be stuck with two DHs in the OF while Robles keeps eating protein bars and trying to bulk up.

Nightmare of an off-season / season / window / rebuild

Cleveland Baseball Team for a couple years to milk jersey sales before settling on a permanent name.
