moved a lot of the discussion how political views may impact players ability to get along to where political discussions of players goes - the Politics section.  There's a thread there on Nats Players' Politics. Put that stuff there.

As for access to that section, it is limited by The Chief (with Tom, Squab, and my agreement) to folks with some membership and posting history here.  It really is not what is supposed to be the focus of the board.

The TL;DR version is that Davey got a three year deal but didn't get to pick his staff when he first came to DC.

Seems about right. Davey making this call is fine with me. Menhart is nothing worth fretting about.

Sorry if this was already asked but what pitching coaches are on expiring deals or are "out there" for jobs?

Also, I'm not upset or surprised by the firing of Menhart since this organization has struggled in the past decade to develop arms through the minor league system, and Menhart was the Pitching Coordinator until his promotion in 2019. I'm hoping for not only a strong hire for PC at the MLB level, but an entirely new pitching strategy at all levels of the minors (whatever amount of teams that may be post COVID).

Some epic trolling going on there. Or, “dude where’s my ring?”

He trolled the Yankees too.

And the Padres.

Bauer would be an interesting signing, but it still doesn't fix catcher, 1B, 3B, or another OF.

He's doing it with all the teams.

If he legit wants a one year deal, do it. You have nothing to lose. And if he convinces one of Cavalli/Rutledge/Cate to adopt his methods and/or go to Drive Line, the contract pays for itself.

You know if Sendley gets the axe then it is serious . . .

Kevin Long is the only one I think we'll miss.

But its Davey's team now. He gets to pick his staff. I just hope he can bring in a decent pitching coach.

He’s the only one who survived last time around and that’s the case once again, at least so far. Kevin Long is gone too.

More transactions from the Nationals:

Paolo Espino and Aaron Barrett have declared free agency.

Roenis Elías cleared outright waivers and has declared free agency. Elías was on the 60–day IL. The move does not impact the 40-man roster number, which remains at 37.

Elias has to go down as one of our worst ever acquisitions

Both him and Strickland were busts, but still better than Dan Haren or Papeldouche (even if in hindsight [or just not donning the rose colored glasses while he was here] Papeldouche was right about Harper). Also even as much as I tried to praise the Willingham deal, that was a bust as well.

I really don't think managers matter, and I think assistants matter even less. I hate to say it, but I think the most important attribute of a pitching or hitting coach is the ability to be fired and get the player's attention.

I think they only matter to an extent they keep the clubhouse together. I think Matt Williams was fine, but lost the clubhouse. Dusty Baker came into the place, fixed the clubhouse, had a great few seasons. Davey Martinez seems fine for simple fact he runs the clubhouse well.

Baseball decisions are so statistically driven now, and with the 3 batter minimum and universal DH, even less for a manager to do. There are still pitch to pitch decisions and some managing, but I believe the most important thing is keeping guys motivated day-to-day to work to improve their craft.

another interesting guy who was out of a job this year was Jim Hickey.  I wonder if Davey has already spoken to him.  Would be one of those Madden staff connections.

Hickey left the Cubs for "personal reasons" and I think he has been with the Dodgers since 2019 in a "player development" capacity. The thing is that this franchise doesn't just need a new pitching coach, they need an entire pitching overhaul from the minors on up.

I think he left of his accord after Dusty Baker was fired.

Don Cooper was let go from the White Sox today.

That makes very little sense, in addition to firing the manager.  Those guys took a young, bad team and turned it into a playoff team that looks like a potential monster going forward.  In particular, Cooper fixed Giolito.  That team went into the season a damaged-goods Keuchel and a bunch of under-25s for a rotation and made the playoffs.  If that gets you fired, what was he supposed to do, turn Ross Detwiler into Kershaw?

Could have been salary disputes...they may have wanted to get paid after what they accomplished...

Could have laughed at their boss for showing up for work in one of those bicycle racer jerseys.  That happened to a guy I worked with...
