https://www.masnsports.com/byron-kerr/2020/10/nationals-cut-ties-with-pitching-coach-paul-menhart.html

“Menhart, 51, said he received a telephone call from manager Davey Martinez this evening with the news that his contract, which was up on Oct. 31, would not be renewed. “I’m not sure how to take all of this,” Menhart said in a text message to MASNsports.com. “It’s quite a shock.” Menhart said he had attempted to reach Mike Rizzo, but has not yet been able to speak with the general manager.

““I have given 15 years to this organization, starting from the bottom, trying to help numerous pitchers achieve their major league dreams,” Menhart said. “Winning a World Series was the icing on the cake. This organization has been very kind to me and my family and I wish them luck in the future.” The Nationals, through a team spokesman, confirmed that Menhart would be replaced as pitching coach.“

I'm not happy to see him lose a job, but the Nats desperately need to overhaul their approach to developing pitching

I guess if we’re going to argue that the Nats can’t develop pitching then he’s about as responsible as anyone

Crappy way to handle this...a phone call from the manager.
Gutless...

As a pitcher he would have to be a real dumbass to not take a multi year deal.  Of course he seems like a dumbass.

He's not a dumbass, but he's a difficult dude.  He  has a habit of not getting along with people and consequently getting traded.  One year deals mitigate the risk of being sent somewhere he doesn't want to be - since I doubt anyone is giving him a no-trade given his perceived personality issues.

Well, Davey did say the starting pitching (acknowledged as our major strength) was pretty bad.

what's the issue with Davey giving him the news? Established managers typically hire their own staff, right?  Menhart works for Davey.

It's like breaking up by text instead of a face to face. Dave should've zoomed. :mg:

Right...Rizzo fired Dusty by phone after Dusty stayed in town for what, 9-10 days, waiting for word on 2018...and it was Rizzo who fired pitching coach Derek Lilliquist and tapped Menhart for the job.

This was even more gutless by having Davey call Menhart...

They should hire Jonathan Tosches as the pitching coach.  He was the cat that actually noticed that Stras was tipping his pitches during the WS...

Point was they did it by phone rather than in person.  Same as now.

Is Tosches the assistant pitching coach?

Rizzo had to be the one to call Dusty.  This time he had someone to delegate it to.  That's always how it went where I worked.  Well hardly anyone ever fired but when bad news came.

Rizzo also fired Lilliquist...probably by text message...

Jonathan Tosches is the coordinator of advance scouting.

Is being the Nats "video replay guy" part of that job description? He does that too.

Is "advance scouting" done in person, or by looking at video on upcoming opponents these days?

Not sure how you arrived at that conclusion. He's one of, if not the, most analytical pitchers in the history of baseball. His mental prep is continuous and he is constantly researching and taking classes on various subjects to try and get an edge.

I would LOVE to have him in DC on a one year, 30+ million deal. If he got one of our pitching prospects to go to Drive Line or adopt his methods, it would pay for itself.
He is a total ass and troublemaker no surprise you like him and we don’t want him, more trouble than he is worth.

A bit of hyperbole here.  He has been with a total of 3 teams...2 over the past 8 years...6 years with the Indians...and traded twice over his 9 year career...

Royce was never traded, yet over the same timespan he might be regarded as having been every bit as much the difficult dude, and not getting along with people.  I know I came to despise him...  ;)

This guy is on record as saying he doesn’t get along with people.
