Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Major General John Reynolds, USA, killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 1863. He was succeeded as corps commander by Major General Abner Doubleday, though Meade replaced Doubleday the following day. Doubleday, of course, is part of the mythos of baseball.

And a happy birthday to Fannie Flagg (76), Jerry Bruckheimer (76), Stephen King (72), Bill Murray (70), Cecil Fielder (56), Luke Wilson (49), among others. And a happy National Pecan Cookie Day!

Rhys Hoskins (10-day IL) and J.T. Realmuto are out of the line-up due to injuries. Bryce is at DH after leaving yesterday's game with a back issue. I'm not sure what is up with Cutch.

I'm not gonna put a whole lot of stock in it, but between last year and this, Stevenson has been pretty good

He can hit 99 but he doesn’t have much control tonight.

I was going to label him lead-off hitter of the future based off one at-bat, so your assessment is modest my comparison.

You forgot about 60 major leaguers, including Sam McDowell and Doug Davis both of whom had higher WARs than Cecil Fielder.

I didn't forget. I just omitted to mention them. Actually, the only other one on the MLB birthday list I was familiar with was Scott Spiezio.

It is also the 130th anniversary of the birth of Royal Saxon Army aviator Max Immelmann (1890-1916), the Eagle of Lille, familiar to me as a military historian, and familiar to friends of mine who are gamers due to the Immelmann maneuver. From various other fields of endeavor, you also have H.G. Wells, Gustav Holst ("The Planets"), Kwame Nkrumah, cartoonist Chuck Jones, Larry "J.R. Ewing" Hagman, etc. And for a Nats connection, John McHale, first president of the Expos. I'd also mention Henry Gibson, but I hate Illinois Nazis.

Kieboom's getting a lot of experience on the right side of the infield.

Six strikeouts and one earned run. I wish all our pitchers had control issues like this

Sudden Sam McDowell is the best of them, a 6 time all star pitcher with 141 wins, a 3.17 era, an average K per inning and 43.5 WAR over 15 years (61-75). Fielder had a 17.2 WAR.
(I ‘m with you on the Illinois Nazis.)

Sanchez on a roll.
No doubt just jinxed him.

You may have confused him with Prince Fielder his son. Cecil was 6-3 235, Prince 5-11 275.
Only father-son who both hit 50 hrs in a season.
