Rays in 4

We do get the two teams with the best regular season records.

Feel like it’s time for the Dodgers, finally. Rather see the Rays win but I’m a Kershaw fan so I’d be cool with a Dodger win too.

Oh c'mon Skippy - even though you could have made Hollywood if you had tried, you still live in FL and should be rooting for the Rays.

The Rays and Marlins (more so than the A's and Royals) have put the lie to a franchise needing fan support, a lucrative TV/radio network, and/or a high payroll to win big.

The Rays make more money off their TV deal than the Nats do.

Quote
The Rays’ deal, reported by John Ourand and Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal, will begin next season and pay the Rays an average of $82 million per season over 15 years, which amounts to $1.23 billion. The Rays are set to receive $35 million in the last year of their current contract, and that will increase to roughly $50 million in 2019. Assuming a steady rise over the life of the deal, rights will increase at 6.7% annually. The Rays’ new agreement is worth significantly less than many of the others inked over the last few years and doesn’t appear to come with an ownership stake. However, the money for the Rays is an indication that tremendous value still exists in the acquisition of local rights even as the landscape of television changes.
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/even-the-rays-can-get-a-billion-dollar-tv-deal/

Last year they had a viewership of close to 80,000 households per game.

The Tampa Bay Rays continue to struggle at the gate, but on television, fans tuned in in larger numbers as the team made the playoffs. The club saw ratings increase 23% over 2018 on FOX Sports Sun.

That Forbes article shows their 2019 ratings as higher than the Nats (3.03 v. 2.52).

They have not only the Tampa area, but I think they'd have Orlando and a lot of Florida up to braves country.

Yes we get the Rays games here in Orlando. We also get the Marlins games. Must see TV.

I hate the Rays' anodyne rebranding...like the kind of vaguely religious soft rock one hears on FM in places like, well, Tampa.  They are like the baseball equivalent of Bread or Seals & Crofts.  Go Dodgers
Outside of LA, will anyone be rooting for the dodgers?

It's crazy that Sinclair now owns all these contracts that are rising while subscriber losses are growing and inevitable.   It seems only a matter of time before they bankrupt the subsidiary or themselves that owns them and all these Sinclair sports networks collapse.   COVID probably gave a little short term relief to these sports networks since they still get their subscriber money without games, but probably get a brake on what they pay the sports teams.  But COVID also accelerated cord cutting and I would guess they can't last more than 2-3 years and will leave half the team without TV contracts.

The snowbird business model relies quite a bit on gate receipts, no?  In the absence of a stable consistent organic fanbase, one needs Cubs fans in Miami, Red Sox/Yankees fans in Tampa, etc.  I guess the West coast of Florida would be more Tiggers, ChiSox, Indians etc.

I think the Rays winning makes a great story for the community, and sets up some anticipation for the SB.  I can't speak for Rays fans...since they don't have any :P...but the Bolts and Bucs fans always treated visiting fans with class...unlike places like Nashville and the other usual suspects...you know who they are.  I'd like to see them sweep all 3 Championships...

He's been around for years, so if he pulls an Angel Hernandez and screams discrimination, it won't look good for MLB. Easier to just toss him the bone in a seven man crew and hope any call he blows can be corrected by competent people standing near him.

Tichenor behind the plate tonight could be just as bad.

It's been a year since my last Doritos locos taco.  I'm looking forward to it.
