Don’t you want a winning team.

Of course I do - but that means staying away from your foolish ideas

Other than Soto and Turner the team has no above average players. Maybe Kieboom and García will develop?  Max is in decline. Sanchez gone next year. Strasburg frequently injured.  And the Lerners don’t want to pay the luxury tax.  They have little to no chance to beat the Braves the next few years.

You make it sound like everything else is frozen in time and will not change.  Changes will occur without trading Soto.

What changes?  Their farm system is rated among the worst in MLB.  For next year at least they will have a good portion of their payroll tied up in three starting pitchers.  They have lots of holes moving forward.

If Robles, Garcia and Kieboom develop this team has an exceptional core. They’ll need to add starting pitching, a catcher, and of course figure out how to get a reliable bullpen.

First base and RF are needs also in the future.  They are way below average this year offensively at those two positions.

What do we have 3 more years with Soto?
4, not counting this season

Maybe next year will be the "over the luxury tax threshold" year.  Thinking outside the box -- maybe pick up Chris Davis' contract along with young, controllable players from the Orioles?

Mendoza is the current 1B of the future.  We don’t have anyone lined up at RF.

He's the 13th prospect listed on the MLB list.  I wouldn't bet on him making it.

I dont know who has the trade pieces and needs that kind of bat.

Trout, Acuna, and maybe Tatis are the only players more valuable. What team is going to sell core players/high prospects for Soto?

At least not for a couple of years. So you have a core for the next couple of years of Garcia, Soto, Robles, Turner, and Kieboom. We have ML depth at SS and need to sign or trade for a catcher, 1B, and RF (and some starters). That’s not terrible.

Jury is still out on Garcia and Kieboom.  Their OPS combined doesn't equal Soto.

True, but it's not fair to compare anyone with Soto IMHO.  The guy is a once in a generation talent.  Several times they put up graphics during the game tonight showing where he stands against others at similar points in his career and he's in rarefied air.

At the end of the day, this season we've subtracted one of our two best hitters and one of our two best pitchers. We're about where we should be. This team has the heart and fight to make a run if we get some breaks and our back-end rotation guys can step up, but this will likely turn out to be a transition year where our young guys develop and Strasburg heals. With a healthy big 3 pitchers next year, and continued growth from Garcia and Kieboom, we'll be in contention mode again. But Kieboom's current stagnation is concerning. Rendon's departure stings more than we expected due to that stagnation and Strasburg's injury. But the real benefit of Rendon's departure is that it will allow us the flexibility to resign our franchise guys - Soto, Turner - and maybe even add a FA piece. As for this year, we need to take 2 of the next 3 to finish this series, or it will functionally be curtains for this season.
