Minus the no-hitter, 6 starts this year: 3.89 ERA in 34.2 IP, striking out 45 and walking 16, allowing 27 hits and 15 earned runs.  That's not terrible, but for comparison, Eric Fedde has a better ERA over his same 6 starts (though Fedde doesn't strike anyone out).

His FIP is 2.70 so the stats nerds will tell you his ERA will come down.  WHIP just over 1 is very good.

Fair enough, but I don't think he's established himself in the de Grom / Buehler / Strasburg / Cole / Scherzer stratosphere yet.

This really is true - out of the top 5 pitchers in 2017 (Sale, Kluber, Scherzer, Strasburg, Severino) only one is healthy right now!
as far as we know . . .

It's a bit disingenuous to drop his best start but not his worst one.  If you do that, he's at a 2.32 in 31 innings with a 42/13 K/BB with 27 hits and 8 ER.  That's pretty darn good.

Feel free to quote this post back at me the next time Erick Fedde puts together back to back outings that total to 16 innings with 26Ks, 3 hits, 2 walks, and no runs allowed.  Giolito's had two starts in the past week that are better than anything Fedde has produced in his entire career.

I think Giolito is going 6/7 innings on average for each game which Fedde is not.

Fedde is pacing himself.

Generally the problem with small sample sizes for starters and relievers in general

10 ER allowed in his last 3 starts (16.2 IP), ERA up to 3.43.

Which means his ERA is more than half a run better than any Nats starter.

Giolito had another rough night yesterday against a playoff team. Perhaps the thread title should be edited to say Dunning, who is on a roll and has a sub-3 ERA.

Dunning is part of it. We shouldnt have had to give up Giolito AND Lopez AND Dunning. The failure to develop Giolito is dramatic, especially when you hear about all the work Giolito was willing to put in to get better.

Oh and for people knocking Giolito, with 1.9 WAR and a sub-4 ERA, he'd be this team's ace. He's now got an ERA under 3.50 in his last 40 starts.

Nats have drafted a pitcher in the first round the last four drafts, and in five of the last seven drafts. Fedde and his career -0.2 WAR is all we've seen.

The Nats local media loves to paint Rizzo and his staff as scouting geniuses but our draft history is poo-poo and our player development outside of latin american sillies is total crap, too. Ain't no way around it.

And yet, four division titles, a wildcard appearance, and a WS win in the span of 8 years.

Yeah Rizzo is a good GM. He's navigating around that expertly. But player development failures are still there. It's more expensive to fix problems via FA and trade. Our international scouting is superb, thankfully.

The problem with fixing all your problems via free agency is that you eventually hit a wall and have to undergo a rebuild to reset payroll.

We effectively did what the Phillies did a decade before.

Well, we have a young core of Turner, Soto, Robles, Garcia, and Kieboom so plenty to build around.

Turner isn't young, Soto, Garcia and Robles were international signings, and Kieboom has been dogcrap.

Soto and Garcia especailly basically had 0 minors time so little instruction/development from our staff. Those are basically home run finds by scouting more than anything.

Turner is 27, that's young in my book.  :)
