2020 trade deadline watch
« Topic Start: August 14, 2020, 12:59:03 AM »
I believe this year's trade deadline is the end of August.  It's clear we need a bat(s).  Who though? JD Martinez to DH?  If Eaton doesn't shape up could we go after little Yaz?

For gods sake, don’t give up prospects to compete in a fake season

even a month of JD is very expensive, like in the $4MM range, so I don't see it.  OTOH, little Yaz will cost a fair amount of talent since he's an established major leaguer now with multiple years before FA.

Yeah, August 31.  Maybe we could convince Zimmerman to come back?

Any prospects- posting with a shopping list implies you’ll have to give up something

Mike Yastrzemski is still pre-arb and is very productive. The Giants arent trading him.

CJ Cron, pre knee injury was a good option.

With the Rockies playing well, Murphy isnt getting traded.

Adam Frazier, Mitch Haniger, and Whit Merrifield seem to be the best bats. Maybe Kyle Seager, but your going to be stuck with him through his age 34 season.

Maybe swing a trade for Josh Bell if you believe Kieboom is a long term option at third.

Yea. They don’t have much to give up anyway.

But the Nats dont need much to begin with. They need a bat, preferably at first base. That's pretty much it. The pitching is fine. The defense is fine. But it's just a horribly inconsistent lineup and having Castro hitting third is a big part of that. It's simply not deep enough to win consistently.

With the payroll flexibility we have this year, they should be able to get someone for a minimal prospect payment.

The farm system is weak at this point. So number one they don’t have much to offer. Two by trading what they have they make it worse. There is a pretty good chance that even if they trade for a bat they won’t make it past the first round of the playoffs.  The starting pitching just does not look as good as last year for various reasons.

They got Hudson for Kyle Johnston.

If you're not planning on a deep postseason run, then theres no point in playing any of the vets who are going to be on the team next season. You're effectively punting the season.

Do you think they could get a reliable every day bat for someone like that?  I doubt that. Hudson had been out of baseball earlier in 2019.

Yes. The Cubs got nick Castellanos last year. The Phillies got Corey Dickerson. Rays got Jesus Aguilar.

The point is that there are always players available that can help. And if you're not going to try and fix it, there is zero reason to play any more games. They should forfeit them all, send the veterans home, and have all the younger players they need to develop report to Fredericksburg for practice and inter-squad scrimmages.

Need to fix the pitching also.

538 has them with a two thirds chance of making the playoffs as it stands now. Why trade prospects?

I don't know about the rest of you but, on one hand, I am thoroughly enjoying watching these games after being cheated out of four months of baseball; on the other hand I couldn't care less where we end up. This is a fake season. It's like the World War 2 seasons, nobody remembers who won in those years.  I want to make the playoffs, but only to be able to watch more games. We should not trade away anyone of value, for anyone, unless it's to strengthen the team for next season and beyond.

Pitching is (or will be) fine. The bullpen is light years better than last year. Stras is either healthy or hes not.

Because the goal is to win championships.

If Strasburg and Scherzer are not healthy they can’t win a championship. And who is going to fix Sanchez.  They pitching will not be ok just because you say so.

Corbin is fine  too.  3 studs and someone usable is all you need in a playoff rotation

So Scherzer and Corbin?  Who are three and four?  They need to just shut Stras down.

No need for that unless the medical team determines there is a risk of more serious injury.  We don't have enough information to make that sort of decision.

He keeps pitching and it doesn't go away.  Doesn't take a doctor to figure out he needs more time off.
