My thought exactly. If the 2021 Doo is like the 2020 version, I wouldn't trust him in the "mop up" role (if there was even such a thing anymore).

Yea. The issue is his pitching and not his politics.

I hate to say it, but with how random relievers are other than a small group of elite closers, I think Rizzo has had it right for the past decade. Bring in a bunch of wildcards in the offseason, see who sticks, and if the team is in contention at the deadline bring in more arms.

I think it works more often that not, and seems the Nats giving a guy a multi-year contract is amount to killing that guy's career.

Clippard has been consistently good since he left us, is consistently affordable, and is a fan favorite.  Why we never try to add him back is beyond me.

I love Clippard, but I would not be surprised if he doesn't want to be National. I think he either wanted to be a closer or a starter, and his success as a setup guy in DC prevented that from ever happening. Then he had that surprise trade, and I think I remember him being best friends and roommates with Drew Storen, whose time here ended terribly.

He probably has a lot of weird feelings about D.C., but he is a guy I will always be thankful for. He goes down with players like Michael Morse, Ian Desmond, Jordan Zimmermann, and Craig Stammen who may have been gone long before 2019 but I still consider vital in transitioning this franchise from the trash bin to the elite.

He likely wanted go be a closer during his time in DC. Closers make money.

But at this point in his career, he seems to have accepted his role as reliever. Higher leverage reliever, but still not a closer

He's signed one year deal the last three seasons.
