Which relievers came into a season with dead arm? Dead arm is a fancy way of saying fatigue. That's all. Doolittle has nothing to be fatigued over because he hasnt done anything for 9 months. He threw 17 innings the last two months of the season.

He isnt anything in his current state. He is throwing batting practice. Put him on the IL, let him work out his crap away from the team. But as it stands, he can't locate. He cant throw hard. And hes trying to develop secondary pitches in real games. He isnt a long term piece here in DC, so let him get better and ready for what amounts to a free agency try out.

I gotta agree with this.  Doolittle made 83 appearances last year, and who knows how many times Martinez warmed him up and didn't use him.  There is a huge spate of pitcher injuries right now compared to the normal opening of seasons. I don't know whether teams have had guys throwing too little in the unplanned offseason or too much, but it's possible he erred in the latter direction.  Seems unlikely, though, given so many obvious data points: 83 appearances and velocity loss screams elbow problem to me, not a dead arm.  And yeah, I know he doesn't throw many breaking balls, but Kendall Graveman needed Tommy John, and he sometimes used to go entire starts throwing literally one or two breaking pitches.

But overall I'm in total agreement.  As I said on the game thread last time, he shouldn't be pitching in major league games right now.

I suspect he was leaning towards opting out and therefore did not throw enough in the shutdown.

sometimes relievers just end up dead overnight. doo isn't the first or last reliever to show some cracks, rebound, then just fall off completely. he's probably cooked, best case he's a middle of the pen guy.

Yeah, I've said it before and I'll say it again: relief pitchers are the placekickers of MLB.  Sometimes they just fall apart out of nowhere.  Both roles are highly psychological, so that's likely a factor.

Relievers fall apart all the time. That's why I am fine with Rizzo's strategy past decade renting relievers versus long term deals. Soriano was the only big signing and yikes.

I think Doolittle may just be cooked. I'd shut him down today and offer him a bare minimum deal next Spring. Hopefully he can figure it out.

Soriano was only a two year deal, as much as it seemed like about twelve.  Hudson's contract is pretty similar, although at least he didn't require the loss of a first round pick.

we just paid it over 4, so he was always a cash flow problem and our highest paid reliever during that stretch.

Have we gotten the most out of Ryne Harper?

Harris and Rainey both were fortunate to escape.  It helps when you are unhittable when you throw strikes like Rainey.  Hudson was unfortunate on the HBP that started, but I guess that should have been a tip that his control was off.  Hudson seems very good or very bad (like in his 2 blown saves).

Who do you trust in this pen?

I got:
Rainey
Hudson (even after last night)
Guerra
Bacus
Harper (I dig the soft toss look)
Suero

Oh yeah and that Finnegan guy

Our bullpen is going to die with Fedde, Voth, and Sanchez making up 3/5 of the rotation.

If ever there was a season, this is it. Two extra relievers on the roster.

I do wonder why they're not putting Howie on the IL, especially with a day off tomorrow

I'm hoping we see Rutledge in the rotation at some point.

Also don't know why we called up Romero and not Cronin

I don't think so. At full strength his fastball is 94.  It's 89-90.

Will Harris is garbage.

I don't get it. One of the most dominant relievers, comes here and he is brutal. How many guys come here and are brutal??

It's not good practice to sign guys who are 35 and have been making assloads of appearances every year.  Dude pitched in 80 games last year.  80!
