thing is, this is 3 weeks after the questionable flight MLB set up for the dominicans coming to the US for the season. I guess that's an exposure here, unless it is a false positive.
So as I understand this the Nats tested everyone on close proximity with Juan but won’t have those results until tomorrow?  Meanwhile everyone will play. MLB needs to hope that they don’t have two teams full of positive players by end of the weekend. I thought the whole reason for the 60 man pool was for if something like this happened?

This seems totally fine.

Pretty crappy response from Rizzo...this isn't business as usual and anyone but him seems to know that.  I'm sure Juan got all warm and fuzzy with Mike's concern for his welfare...

Yeah, that wasn't his finest moment.  Folks don't require lung transplants after oblique injuries.

That was my feeling too but, now that it’s here, I’m kind of glad baseball is back. At least it’s a small step towards normal life. We’ll see how it goes.

Yeah, I won't argue with saying this is a terrible idea.   I am going to selfishly enjoy watching baseball and hope no one gets too sick.

So the gist of this is that Soto practiced and played on Tuesday, test came back positive, others (at least those considered to be in close proximity) were then tested but no results are back, and Some of these others are presumably playing tonight? Is that how this works?

To be fair, from a reporter's tweet, we have no idea what he was asked. She may have asked  "how are you going to handle Soto's absence due to a positive test?"

Dougherty tweets:

Quote
Sources: Juan Soto took multiple instant-result coronavirus tests today — both saliva and nasal — and the results were negative. The tests were conducted by the team, which is permitted by MLB protocol as a point-of-care option when rapid testing is necessary.

To be cleared he needs another negative test from a league-approved testing lab 24 hours after the first negative test, so there’s a decent chance this was a false positive and he’ll be back soon.

Or, the rapid saliva tests are proving false negatives

Oh, and he’s pregnant.

The fact that Soto tested negative on Thursday probably influenced his answer. Probably assuming it’s a false positive.

Let’s hope it was a false positive. And that he’s not pregnant. And that he’s really not 30 years old.

Don’t get your hopes up for a false positive. They are extremely rare, much different than false negatives.

Testing is overrated.
yes of course. The more testing, the more infections. In fact the theory now is that testing is the leading cause of coronavirus deaths.

I thought they were more common on the fast tests that MLB is probably using? The tweet from Dougherty indicates he has more than one test yesterday so they must be quick turnaround.

You finally understand.  And anyway it’s no worse than the flu.

A family member tested positive.  Ironically it was a false positive. And the cause was a transcription error - preliminarily it was reported by a human as positive, then subsequently corrected.  But in the interim, I did  a bit of research and concluded that most false positives are that sort of error.  So, we can hope that it's a transcription error in Soto's case, but it doesn't happen often.

A false negative occurs because the virus isn't found in the sample.  Doesn't mean it's not there. For example (not too be too graphic) I had a prostate biopsy about eight years ago. They took 12 core samples and found cancer in one.  Could have just as easily missed that core, I would have come out negative, but I'd still have cancer, in fact I've had two biopsies since, both completely negative, but the cancer is undoubtedly still there (no worry, I'm assured I'll die of something else before it becomes a problem).

I believe Slate posted this the other day.

Maybe ... maybe not

we knew about the previous two positives, I assume what the Zauzmer meant is "new" positives.
