Fastball sitting at 88...

It’s early.  This has been the Eaton show so far. Kieboom still looks lost at the plate.

Hudson needs to be the closer.  I think Doolittle is done as a closer.  Last year just took too much out of him.
Is this the last year of his contract?

I imagine Hudson is the primary closer with Doolittle perhaps getting the nod when there are a bunch of lefties coming up.  Rainey is waiting in the wings as the closer of the future (with Holden Powell a couple of years away).

This is Doolittle's last year.  He's an UFA at season's end.

Yep. Fortunately.

Be nice if someone in our system could develop into a decent reliever.

Harris may get to close, too.  they could limit Doo to lefty heavy sections of batting orders in the 8th or 9th and mix and match with Harris and Hudson.

Not sure what Doolittle's splits are over the years versus lefties but given that he is just throwing 88 MPH fastballs I'm not sure how much that would help him.

Also, Doolittle doesnt have any offspeed pitches worth a damn.

Maybe he's just easing in to the season. But Hudson doesnt want to close and Harris hasnt really done it before.

Yes, that's what I meant by throwing only fastballs--no off speed to keep a lefty off balance.  He needs to develop something if he wants to stay around.  Not sure he does though.

this was Doolittle's first appearance, let's not write him off yet.  Remember that often in ST pitchers are working on different pitches and not necessarily trying to get batters out.

The "lets bat Asdrubal wherever we want" aspect to the game was interesting.  Hopefully either he or Kieboom figure out how to hit at some point, neither have looked good so far.

WRT to relievers, Suero had only allowed 1 hit in six innings before ST fell apart.  He wasn't exactly terrible last year (2.57 ERA / 1.190 WHIP in 42 IP).

is that 88 for real this year?  Last year he had lost 1 MPH from his career 94.8 avergae per fangraphs.  Since that included his recovery time, he should be close to 93 - 94 if he is healthy.  88 will not work for him.  FWIW, he throw about 12% sliders and changes.  With the Nats, the slider more effective than the fastball per pitch, but it was probably set up by the fastball being used so much and not dominant like his fastball when it is right.  Watch to see whether he increases using the slider.  If he does, then he probably knows his fastball is not right.

I heard the 88 from Charlie and Dave a couple times.  Not sure if he threw some harder.
