rehabbing now with FCL

Made 2 rehab appearances in the FCL:
-1 inning giving up 3 earned runs (only time this year he’s given up 3 or more in one appearance) but that was his first action back
-3 innings giving up 1 hit, no walks with 3 Ks

Then he moved back up to high A where he has made 2 starts:
- 4 innings giving up 2 hits, 1 walk, no runs, and striking out 6
- 5 innings giving up 2 hits, 2 walks, no runs, and striking out 6

On the year he has a 2.68 ERA in 37 IP with 54K/12BB and 23 hits given up for a 0.95 WHIP and a .178 AVG against.  Won’t turn 23 until mid July next year.  Probably will start on AA next year.  He looks very promising

From MLB.Com:

Quote
Cole Henry, RHP (No. 8), High-A Wilmington
Henry hurled yet another solid start, this time going five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and only two hits allowed in the form of a pair of singles in the second inning. The 2020 second-rounder worked efficiently after a 19-pitch first inning, tossed 49 of his 65 pitches for strikes and fanned three of the first four batters he faced. It’s the third straight scoreless outing for Henry, who owns a 1.89 ERA in eight High-A appearances with 54 strikeouts in 38 innings.

He’s made 10 starts (11 appearances).  47 innings with a 70/12 k/BB ratio.  Only 28 hits given up.

1 outing with 5 walks, 2 with 2 walks, 3 with 1 walk, and 5 with no walks.

He looks good guys.

Starts the year at Harrisburg, I imagine, and on the screen for a call up late in the year?

Thats optimistic. Pitched under 50 innings this season, and 43 at the level he should have started at this season. Lot of development still as he needs a third pitch if he's going go be a starter.

My guess: first part of season at Harrisburg, then second half at Rochester. Assuming no injuries, maybe Spring Training in 2023.

Dude’s a stud I’ve been saying it.  Him and cavalli will be in the opening day rotation 2023 along with gray and 2 out of Rodgers, Espino, Adon, and strasburg

Much better today:
Quote
Henry’s fourth AFL outing (second start) saw him compile six strikeouts over four innings, yielding just one run on two hits. Thus far, batters are hitting .163 against the hard-throwing righty, who has a league-leading 21 punchouts in his 12 Fall League frames.

Post article today about Henry:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/11/08/cole-henry-nationals-prospect/
An excerpt:

Whatever the case, the 22-year-old has thrived so far for Surprise, ranking second in the Fall League with 23 strikeouts through Sunday. Elbow soreness limited him to 43 innings with the high-Class A Wilmington Blue Rocks in 2021. In them, though, he posted a 1.88 ERA, struck out 63 batters and walked 11. The Nationals sent Henry to Fall League because they wanted to see him pitch more, plain and simple. And all he’s done is improve his spot in the organization’s plans.

“The hitters here, man, these are really good lineups,” Henry said. “There are no easy outs, really. But what’s working for me is just both fastballs, four-seam and two-seam, two-seams in and four-seams up or away. Beyond that, mixing in my change-up and curveball. Just keeping it simple and throwing strikes.”

Baseball America recently ranked Henry, a second-round pick in 2020, as the Nationals’ sixth-best prospect. Other arms in the mix are Cade Cavalli (ranked second), Andry Lara (fifth), Joan Adon (seventh), Gerardo Carrillo (eighth) and Jackson Rutledge (ninth). Then there’s Josiah Gray, 23, who arrived in the Max Scherzer-Trea Turner trade and pitched for Washington in August and September.

Two National League scouts at Fall League said Henry is only behind Cavalli in “pure stuff” among the Nationals’ young pitchers. The scouts talked under the condition of anonymity because their employers do not allow them to speak publicly about other team’s players. Rutledge, who is on Surprise’s staff with Henry, is in that discussion, too, but coming off an injury-filled year. Henry’s stock is rising fastest.

His four-seam fastball typically sits in the mid-90s. Mark Scialabba, the Nationals’ assistant general manager in charge of player development, called Henry’s change-up his “most consistent off-speed pitch.” On Friday, Scialabba predicted that Henry’s change-up could be a swing-and-miss weapon against righties and lefties down the line. Drew Millas, a minor league catcher for the Nationals, has also been impressed.

“Cole’s fastball command is always going to be there, and that’s huge,” Millas said. “That may fluctuate with the two-seamer at times, just because it has so much run to it. But he’s a really dynamic pitcher.”

“With two fastballs, he can consistently change eye levels,” Scialabba explained. “He controls both pitches and can mirror well with his change-up, keeping hitters guessing. It allows him to throw to all quadrants of the zone.”

Nationals pitching prospect Cole Henry was named an AFL all-star. He has a 3.32 ERA, 30 K and 9 BB across his six games/19 IP. He is holding opponents to a .176 average

Dudes a stud.  Will continue to say so.  He should start next year at AA with maybe some relief innings/a start or two in November.

2023 will be nice with gray/cavalli/Henry/Adon all being viable rotation options with upside.

If rutledge ever turns into anything at this point that’s cake

If you believe in Henry, the Nationals rotation problems are less depressing.

I’m slowly coming around.

I could get excited about a 2023 rotation of Gray/Cavalli/Adon/Corbin/FA with Cole Henry in the minors.

Im not going to be excited about Henry until he can make 20 starts without injury. He, Denaburg, and Rutledge have about the same amount of innings the last four seasons or so

you know, if he's a multi-inning reliever like Betances or Miller in their prime, that's not the worst outcome.  Clearly, he has the stuff.  It's just how frequently and how long he can do it without breaking down that is the question.  I think as long as he stays off the injury list, his floor is quite high.

my guess is he topped Denaburg's innings just in the AFL last fall.  Prove me wrong.

You're probably right. But Henry hasnt made it 15 starts in any season since high school. He was hurt both seasons in college, and every year he's been drafted. He's as much a figament as Denaburg or Rutledge is at this point.

Comparing him to denaburg is absolutely asinine and you know it.
