Better question is why? Is Suzuki hurt? Is Howie going to the IL?

Barrera's suspended, Castillo quit.  That leaves 4 catchers from the initial 60.  It might be that Suzuki is hurt (Gomes has been playing more).  It could also be that Read got hurt, for example, and they just want more bodies at the alternate site.

added to the 60 man? from where?

Imref's ftp thread: https://www.wnff.net/index.php?topic=37940.msg2099993#msg2099993

Transactions page just shows that he was invited to spring training.  I'm not entirely sure how the 60 man roster works but I'd imagine he has to be placed on it to be in Fredericksburg?

An interesting wrinkle for this season is he also has to be on it if they want to trade him.

He’s our top catching prospect. We aren’t trading him.

"Our top catching prospect" doesn't mean he's an objectively good catching prospect.   He's not high in any organizational top-10s that I've seen, which puts him alongside guys who grade out as fringe major leaguers.    A .593 OPS and 25% K rate at Hagerstown - even at 19 - puts you in that band.    Nor is he anywhere close to MLB-ready.

So there are only a couple reasons to have him on the 60 - a warm body as a catcher in camp with injuries and suspensions, to keep him playing against good players (even in sim games) in what would normally be an important developmental year, or to trade him.   But it's pretty absurd to categorically rule out trading him.  He's a lottery ticket prospect, exactly the type of dudes who get traded for relief pitchers all the time.

Catching prospects are super hit and miss, too. Remember when Jesus Flores was the catcher of the future? There's like 10 good catchers in the majors at any given point and a kid at low-A hitting below a 600 OPS is not an untouchable prospect. We just won a World Series with scrap heap catchers.

Gary Sanchez was a can't miss catching prospect who raked in the minors and now can't hit his weight. Catchers are weird.

The Lerners will break the bank to sign JTR. Oops make that the Yankees. Then the Nats can scoop up Sanchez.

Gary Sanchez is a career wRC+ 120. Pretty sure he's planning out. Hes been a top 5 catcher from 2016 - present

He certainly can hit HRs. Isn’t he considered terrible defensively though?

he's been all over the place the last few years and 2 of the last 3 years OPS below 700. his swing looks awful these days. K rate is up, walk rate plummeting, when he makes contact he crushes it but he's no sure-fire stud catcher. his D is bad, too.

Hes considered lazy at times. But, defensively, he isnt any worse than half the starting catchers

But if we're talking offense, hes right there with Realmuto

Are you counting this season in that "2 of 3?" Because you make it "2 out the last 4" and twice hes hit 30+ homers. He was also hurt in 2018

Really not sure what you're trying to say here. There are maybe five franchise catchers in baseball right now, and he is one of them.

i'm saying the number of catchers who are consistently studs are countable on one, maybe 2 hands. sanchez looks like that sometimes, sometimes he doesn't. i've followed the yankees closely enough to know he's got plenty of issues at the plate and for all his power his average is slipping and his peripherals are dropping. catchers are really hard to peg. he should be entering his prime and the only plus tool he has is power (luckily he can crush the ball). maybe he bounces back this year but it's possible he settles in to a .230/.310/.480 guy which is damn good for a catcher but with poor D he'll never be as well-regarded as a realmuto, for example.

getting a complete catcher is probably the hardest thing to get besides an ace starter and sanchez, despite being heralded as a can't miss stud, is not one of the complete catchers.

how many can't miss catching prospects did the NYY have in  the last decade?  Jesus Montero was one.  Cervelli might be the best of the bunch, and he was not touted.

How is Blake Swihart doing these days?  Prospect hype in the ESPN corridor is not unipolar.

I remember when they didn't get Cole Hamels from the Phillies cause they wouldn't give him up.  Of course Hamels did next to nothing in Texas.

looks like either Ben Braymer or Wil Crowe will start one of the DH games on Saturday.  Zuck notes that with the rainout yesterday Fedde could start, but then they'd still need another starter for Tuesday.

funny.  i would have loved that last winter.  Looks like a minimal $ commitment.  I wonder who gets the axe for him.  Maybe a marginal bullpen guy with options?  He's basically a lefty hitting Harrison with even more position versatility.

Brock holt is now a nat.  Interesting versatility.  Good track record.  We'll see if he can put his bad start to the year behind him
