Blow it Up (2020)
« Topic Start: June 25, 2020, 02:12:55 PM »
Since the season is only 60 games, the Nats have no chance. I don’t need to remind you all how the first 60 games went last year. So I think we should prepare for the future. Soto is the only thing that is untouchable. Doolittle seems right to trade. We need to get on this. Trade deadline is only 5 weeks from the start of the season.

Best case we finish with 33 fewer wins- time to press reset

You mean 5 weeks?

Once Max gives up a couple of homers in inning one of the opener it will be all downhill.

Yes. 5 weeks. Corrected.

Are we playing the first 60 games of a season, or the last 60 games of the season?  I'm going with the last 60, so we'll be awesome.

Well, I don't think any of the teams with TJ recovery cases or young starters will need to worry about innings limits.

A's are supposed to need a 2B by the deadline. I could see A-Cab or Castro getting moved.

I'd give it a few more games before hitting panic button.

If we "blow it up", what does that even mean? They're not moving Strasburg, Corbin, or Scherzer. I guess you sell off Kendrick and Cabrera. Not sure they want to give up Tanner Rainey. Maybe they can move Hudson.

It's crazy to me to blow it up with this short season. I know the team just looks absolutely horrible, but all they need to do is limp through the regular season around .500 to sneak into the playoffs and then who knows. 3 game set with a healthy Stras-Corbin-Max... I'll take my chances.

That is why I'm hesitant. If we get in the playoffs, our Top 3 give us a shot. Even pre-COVID I think we all knew this team would have some struggles in the lineup, but if we got in the playoffs we'd have a shot.

But even if we go another tough week or two, not like we have a bunch of easy to move assets.

Honestly, this season is like playing Russian Roulette with a semi-automatic pistol. I wouldn't make any sort of long term decisions based on this season. If they were already planning to pull the plug on a contract or pull the trigger on a trade, fine. But with the expanded playoffs, teams not playing the same number of games, universal DH, expanded rosters, and lack of a normal routine for spring training, etc., it's just nuts to look at the sample sizes in this season and use that as a basis for long term team makeup.

Actually, my thought isn't so much a blow up as moving an older vet to make room for Garcia at 2d or to clear out some of the alternatives when kieboom takes over 3d full time.  That's why I said Castro or  A-Cab.  They may have some value to an As team at 2d.

Supposedly the A's care a lot about infield defense these days.  I'm not sure either is a fit in that respect, although the guys the A's are playing there currently are no great shakes defensively either.

I could see either of these guys playing 2d for them, surrounded by Marcus Semien, Matt Chapman, and Matt Olson, and the music at the park playing "one of these things is not like the other" from Sesame Street.

To be fair, they've had that opportunity for a while - Chapman/Semien/[Yikes]/Olson has been the infield for several years now.

Lowrie wasn't terrible defensively but he sure stuck out.  And then they ran Jurickson Profar out there for 120 games or something last year.  He's had an amazing career for a dude who's been subsisting on little more than prospect hype for about 5 years now.   He's basically Danny Espinosa without the defense.  Now they've gone to  playing outfielders there and somehow that's better than Profar.

In other words, you've talked me into this one.

C'mon, that's stingy.  Make them throw in Puk, too.  I mean, injury risk and all that.

Don’t give up yet. Last year they were at .380 winning pct with 31% of season over. This year .364 with only 18% of season over.
(Or is that too FPish?)
