He also did not lose focus during the rather longer delay when a skunk wandered onto the field while he was pitching. For some reason no one tried to shoo the skunk away - everyone just stood back and let the skunk wander off in its own good time. Once it was gone, it was back to business for Cade.

Gonna guess that they ran out of straws when it came to drawing straws for who was gonna go near the skunk to shoo it.

seems like there's a decent chance we see him next year after he is past super-two cut-off (depending on what/if the CBA looks like next year)

Davey on Cavalli via Federalbaseball:

Quote
“We’re keeping close eyes on Cade,” Martinez said yesterday. “He’s doing well. He’s done well in Double-A. I think there’s going to be a point where he does get moved up to Triple-A fairly soon, but we don’t have any timetable on him, we want him to continue to grow. He’s starting to learn a lot about himself and the strike zone and his mix of pitches, but we think that he’s got a bright future in this organization for a lot of years.”

So, of course, the obvious question is when we might see him up in the Nationals’ rotation, given all the trades the club made, and the youth movement they’ve undertaken as they’re rebooting things in D.C.

“There’s no timetable for when you’re going to see him here,” Martinez said, predictably, “but if he keeps continuing to grow the way he’s growing, who knows what could happen here in the future, but he obviously will be here if things keep going the way it’s going. I’m not saying this year, but fairly soon.”

Wow, that is some development in one year.

Looking at recent highlights, he looks as ready for the majors as Strasburg did at this point. I wouldn't be surprised to see him make one start here in September.

I suppose Davey had an inside source.  Otherwise, I'm asking him to pick some lucky numbers for me.

Rizzo did say last month that the plan was to have him pitch in the AFL.

The Syracuse Salt Potatoes scored five runs in the 3rd inning and beat the Rochester Plates 5-3 Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium.

The Salt Potatoes had just one hit through two innings against Cade Cavalli, who was making his Triple-A debut. Cavalli got a ground out and struck out the opposing pitcher to begin the 3rd inning but Mark Payton singled on a 3-0 pitch, Khalil Lee walked, and New York rehabber Luis Guillorme was down 0-2 before being hit by a pitch to load the bases. Albert Almora Jr. drove in a run with an infield single to make it 1-0 and Travis Blankenhorn cleared the bases with a double on the first pitch of his at-bat to extend the Syracuse lead to 4-0. Wilfredo Tovar followed with a single to make it 5-0.

Cavalli was charged with five runs on five hits, one hit batter, and one walk with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings. The 2020 Washington first round pick (22nd overall) out of the University of Oklahoma is tied for the minor league lead with 154 strikeouts this season.

The Plates (43-54) would not go quietly. Keibert Ruiz walked to start the 4th inning and Daniel Palka settled for a double after just missing a home run to put runners on second and third. Jake Noll drove in Ruiz with a single and Mike Ford's fielder's choice scored Palka to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Rochester put the first two men on in the 6th inning but couldn't score. The Plates did add a run in the 7th inning as Andrew Stevenson struck out with two outs, advanced to second base on a passed ball, and scored on Noll's second RBI single of the night.

Syracuse finished with just six hits and four of them came in that 3rd inning as the bullpen of Diego Moreno, Wander Suero, Gabe Klobosits, and Andrew Lee combined for 5.0 scoreless innings.

The Salt Potatoes tied the 2021 Duel of the Dishes series at one game apiece. The winner-take-all game three will take place on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Whichever team wins will take home the Golden Fork and the losing team will have to do a cap giveaway at their ballpark for the winning team next season.

Sadly, Sunday’s game ended in a 3-3 tie, so neither team could claim the Golden Fork.

pretty decent start on Saturday: 6 IP, 2ER, 5H, 3BB, 4Ks, but took a loss as the team only managed 4 hits.

Link to the source?  I'm guessing Jim Callis.  Who is he with now?

Sorry, I just saw this. It was BA.

6 innings, 3 ER, 8 hits, 5 walks, 4 strikeouts. Took the loss. I watched an inning and Cavalli did not look bad. Saw two doofus-hits. One was a Baltimore Chop the carried over the 2B's head, and other was a ground ball that the SS should have gotten to. Curveball missed a few tmes, but when he got it over, the Scranton Rail Riders couldn't hit it. Looked like a Paolo Espino curve without quite the finesse. Could not tell if it had the left-ward movement of the old Camilo Pascual / Connie Marrero classic Cuban curveball, but pretty good.

I would say that only 4 Ks is even a bigger issue for a top pitching prospect who throws hard and has a big breaking ball. But that’s what the minor leagues are for. Hope they don’t rush him too early next year.

Cavalli won his first AAA game tonight. Five innings, 2 ER, 4 K's.

Looking again: Tanner Rainey pitched an inning, striking out the side.

He was doing great into the 3rd inning. Had five strikeouts as he struck out the first batter. Then vwoosh. Last I looked, he had eight strikeouts in four innings and got pulled after being crushed in the third and fourth.

Cavailli's 176Ks is tops among all minor league pitchers in 2021.
