First start in Double A: 6IP, 2ER, 6K, 4BB, 3H

Fewest strikeouts and most walks in a start on the year, but that’s ok.  Solid results.  Keep it up Cade!

Another solid start at AA tonight.  Like last game, worse than his high A starts, but great nonetheless.

5.2 innings, 6 hits, 2 earned runs, 4 walks, 11 Ks

ERA up to 2.06 in 9 starts.  88 Ks against 20 walks and 33 hits across 52.1 innings

Via Pete Kernel at MASN:

Relieving the Pirates' Quinn Priester to start the fifth inning with his National League team ahead 6-0, Cavalli struck out two and walked two during a 29-pitch inning. He threw 15 pitches for strikes and twice hit 100 mph on the radar gun against American League hitters.

Those Walks are just nerves, right?

Its a one inning exhibition. And he threw 100. It literally means nothing.

Got it! Was factoring in his AA starts at Harrisburg as well when I asked the question. 8 BB in 9 2/3 innings.

Its probably him adjusting to actual competition. Generally speaking, Div I ball is between low A ball and high A ball. Double A is where the talent gets sorted.

So between that and working on his secondary pitches, its not surprising.

Watching now. The second walk was a tough break because he clearly had the guy struck out with a 2-2 fastball at the knees. Then walked him with a breaking ball on the next pitch.

Threw 29 pitches. Struck Jason Dominguez out to end the inning.

Cade Cavalli could conceivably handle his own as an Ohtani-lite. The top pitching prospect in the Washington Nationals system performed solely on the mound in his junior year at the University of Oklahoma, but he was both a pitcher and a corner infielder in the two years prior. And he raked. Cavalli’s sophomore numbers with the Sooners included a .319/.393/.611 slash line with five doubles, a pair of triples, and four home runs in 88 plate appearances. Including his freshman output, the Tulsa native went deep 10 times as a collegian.
...

“For me, I was playing it more on the safe side going into my junior year,” continued Cavalli, “I figured that my future was going to be on the mound. Don’t get me wrong — I loved hitting, and I loved playing every single day— but physically, for recovery purposes… and mentally, focusing solely on pitching, helped me a ton. But I do think there are dudes out there. And I think that I could have done it. But like I said, I was just playing it safe.”

Cavalli is struggling at Harrisburg, gave up 5 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks in 2.1 IP with 3Ks in his last start on Sunday.  ERA at Harrisburg is up to 5.32 with a 1.69 WHIP.  19BBs and 35Ks in 23.2IP

He’s getting challenged.  Good.  High A was too easy for him.  My realistic timetable for him is still hopefully a September call up next year

Agreed, keep him in AA until it's time to shut him down for the season. Good for him to face better competition and get hit a little bit. There's no rush.

Sounds like he is getting hit hard rather than challenged.  I’d prefer he get guys out while challenged. Maybe they should just sell high, or almost high, on him.

Yeeesh. Guy has a few rough starts at a new level in his first real pro season and you are ready to "sell high".. Tough room.

Have to trade him before we mess him up further.

Ehh. I think this logic in sports is flawed "Every QB from Texas Tech is a bust" until Mahomes comes around... Every player is different and develops differently. I am very optimistic about Cavalli's future, but I am an optimistic fan.

Zuck posted a story about Cavalli today, with quotes from Rizzo making it pretty clear we won't see him in the majors this year.

I thought this was interesting at the end.  Folks have been talking about Rutledge and others missing time.  Rizzo suggests that that's part of the arm preservation plan for their top pitching prospects including Cavalli at some point.
Quote
Even if Cavalli proved he was ready to pitch at this level, the Nationals are paying extreme attention to his workload in his first professional season and expect to limit his innings the rest of the way, just as they’ve done with fellow prospects Jackson Rutledge, Cole Henry and Matt Cronin.

“Yeah, we’re cognizant of his pitch count, everybody’s pitch count,” Rizzo said. “You’ve noticed we’ve shut down Rutledge for a period of time; now he’s coming back. We did the same thing with Henry, and we did it with Cronin. We’re giving them kind of a time out to rest themselves and to get back into the swing of things. We’ll do the same thing with Cavalli, where we’ve got a plan in place with him. He’ll finish the minor league season and probably pitch out of, I’d imagine he’ll pitch in the Arizona Fall League this year, and he’ll have plenty innings. From where he’s come from, to where he’ll be at the end of the season, it’ll be a good workload for him.”
Bolded some other news.

zuckerman proving groundbreaking info that a SP prospect not exactly lighting it up in AA at the end of july will not make the majors this year

not sure anyone has even mentioned it
