Follow the Prospects: Cade Cavalli, RHP
« Topic Start: June 11, 2020, 09:39:10 AM »
Selected with the Nationals' first pick of the 2020 draft (22nd overall)

Bats: Right  •  Throws: Right
6-4, 226lb (193cm, 102kg)
Born: August 14, 1998 in Tulsa, OK

Keith Law:
Quote
Cavalli was a two-way player until this spring and had very little pitching experience before his sophomore year. But giving up playing a position seems to have worked for him, as he started throwing more strikes before the shutdown and pushed himself high into the first round. Working without a windup, Cavalli throws bullets up to 97 mph, sitting not far below that, with a hammer slider and power curveball to go with it. Despite some deception in his delivery, he gives up more hard contact than he should, and teams still haven’t found a satisfactory explanation for it. He should have the weapons to be a No. 2 starter, assuming his little-used changeup improves with usage, and is clearly the top guy in the second tier of college starters in the class. The lack of track record and that question about why he’s slightly hittable keep him out of the upper echelon.

MLB Pipeline:
Quote
“Cavalli produces some of the easiest velocity in his Draft class, working at 92-96 mph and topping out at 98 with riding action while expending barely more effort than he would playing catch. He also can make hitters look bad with a low-80s curveball with power and depth, and he has developed an upper-80s slider/cutter that is catching up to his curve. He shows the potential for an average changeup once he starts using the pitch more often. While Cavalli has the upside of a frontline starter, he comes with concerns. Though he has a strong 6-foot-4 frame and clean mechanics, he doesn’t have much track record of staying healthy or throwing strikes. His lack of command and deception also means that his premium stuff gets hit harder than it should.”

I hope he gets to pitch in the minors before he has TJ.

The pitcher we cant develop, so we trade him, our for him to turn into a top 10 pitcher in baseball and have our return become a ~2 WAR player?

If he's 80% of Strasburg I'm good.

the lack of mileage on his arm is positive provided his injuries aren't chronic.  The knock on Rendon out of the draft was people thought he might just have chronic ankle issues.  if he didn't have the ankle concerns he would've gone second to the mariners (hultzen lol)

damn I was really ready to wind up with big bubba starling that year lol

Isn’t that Jordan Zimmerman?

Argument can be made that JZ was as valuable as Stras during their tenure together in DC.

If Cavalli can give us 6+ years of good performance like JZ then walks before blowing up, then I'd consider that a win.  JZ's body of work here makes him at worst the 3 best starter we've had, behind a likely hall of famer and a guy who might get into that discussion with some health and continued strong performance.

Which was my point. 80% of Strasburg is a damn fine pitcher.

Nationals: Cade Cavalli, RHP (No. 2)
The Nationals were so impressed by their 2020 first-round pick’s showing at the alternate training site that he likely would have been a late-season callup had the Nationals been in the playoff hunt. Physical and athletic with a good delivery and a dynamic four-pitch mix, the 22-year-old Cavalli has the look of a future No. 2 starter -- one who could move quickly through the Minor Leagues.

Has there been any word or speculation about how many innings he’ll throw this year?

6 innings tonight.  4 earned runs off 10 hits and 2 walks.  12 Ks though.

Funny that 9 of the 10 hits were singles so maybe some bad luck in there.
