Yea, they do.  They didn't want a bubble.

The way the schedule was put together...there could have been 3 bubbles...New York, Chicago and Los Angeles...cities with 2 MLB parks that could presumably host 5 games daily...or 4 with 1 day game at a nearby MiLB park.

I didn't realize MLB kept the 40-man roster rules in place, making the 60-man roster a completely useless exercise. Manfred is such a joke, every other sports league in the world should be laughing at him.

Nats haven't refused to play. They voted that they didn't want to go to Miami, but signaled that the decision is up to MBL. If the Marlins are allowed to play this weekend -- which is questionable -- there's a chance the games will be switched to Nats Park.

They could barely get the current lose-lose scenario done in time to call it a season for TV and as revenue purposes. Plus, those cities had plenty on their plate on multiple levels in the month of June, which further dampened negotiations for that to get off the drawing board.

Aren’t the Marlins still quarantined in Philly anyway?

The Miami #Marlins' season has been officially paused, as
@CraigMish
reported, with the team in quarantine with 19 positive test results. They likely won't be playing again for another week.

It started with the rule changes of questionable value not discussed widely before autocratic implementation. It ramped up when Black Sox-level activities threatening the integrity of the game got wrist slaps (with further damage from that and the bad umping escaped with the Nats winning the piece of metal with his name on it).

The minor league hatchet job matter was just taking off when the virus matter came up. And here we are.

Probably going to be forced to go to winning percentage with a bunch of teams not playing all 60 games.   I guess Marlins would be looking pretty with their .667 record.

This level of impact meets the commissioner’s own definition for canceling the irregular season, no? Of course, stripping the 2017 title was also justified under Manfred’s iWatch warning which promised dramatic consequences, but we saw what happened there,

I doubt it was ever considered, which is a shame.  Those same cities are hosting games now, so I don't know what the big deal would have been...

I guess this mean the Nats will have a full 3 days this weekend + off day Monday of no games?

To answer my own question. It seems like the plan is to have the Yankees and Orioles play each other right now to make up games (the two Marlins and Phillies opponents) and have the Nats take a 4 day break over the weekend (included scheduled off day on Monday).

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/07/marlins-season-paused-as-mlb-plots-scheduling-modifications.html

1:45pm: In addition to the Phillies being paused through Friday and the Marlins being paused until Monday, the Orioles and Yankees are now indeed likely to play one another on Wednesday and Thursday, Sherman tweets. The Nationals, meanwhile, won’t have a game at all this weekend, since they’d been slated to play the Marlins.

This isn't a beer league softball tournement where guys sit around until a field opens up. It takes some time to prep for a game, and not stadium has a half dozen locker rooms, kitchens, etc.  You're not going to play 4-5 games a day on any field and have Major League level baseball.

Somehow the NHL is going to do it.

Shorter games, smaller rosters and you can resurface the ice pretty quickly.  With baseball you have the elements to deal with, the fact that you can't just resurface the outfield between games, etc.  The NHL issue will be locker rooms but the arenas themselves can handle multiple games a day.

The same goes for basketball as hockey.  For football, it's the same as baseball.  Longer games played outdoors, limited locker room capacity, larger rosters, fields getting torn up every game, etc.

That's not what I proposed...I had 4-5 games played at 2 different fields, and throw in a MiLB park to handle the 5th for a day game...this would be no different than a split doubleheader.  Sorry it wasn't clearer...

Resurface the outfield...  :hysterical:.

I’m really down on the MLB. They really didn’t plan for this.

As long as the season doesn’t end all together, I’m fine with this unpredictable schedule. I’m enjoying what little we have.

There’s no limit on the time for playoff hockey games. They can go on all day or night.

Removed the politics & bickering.  The two primary offenders have been muted for 48 hours.  I only deleted other posts quoting or responding to them, but I may issue mutes for everyone who participates in any form next time, so please stop freaking up the soup.  If you see politics, report it and move on.  I have no more patience for this and will not be wasting my time on nuance.

Thanks

The longest game ever ended at 16:30 of the sixth overtime. Longest game in recent years ended at 12:01 of the fifth overtime. That sort of thing is incredibly rare, of course; only 13 games have ever gone beyond the third overtime (nine of those ended in the fourth, two in the fifth, and two in the sixth).

And we know how the Caps tended to fare

Not sure what the playoff percentage is for how many games go to OT. I would guess 20 percent.
