Three friends of mine have lost a parent.  The family of a close friend of my son’s all got it.

My brother and sister in law and their daughter got it.  SIL was hospitalized but out now.  I am sure there are some former colleagues and acquaintances that died from it that I don’t know about.

The MLBPA delivered a proposal to MLB on Sunday afternoon, a source familiar with it tells ESPN. It includes 114-game season that would end October 31, the right to opt out of the season for all players and potential deferral of salaries if 2020 the postseason were canceled.

What does the last phrase mean? Makes no sense grammatically.

Major League Baseball intends to propose a shorter season in which they would pay players a full prorated share of their salaries, sources told ESPN. The league believes the late March agreement allows it to set the schedule, and that this would fulfill players’ pro rata desire.

Negotiating. Almost like a real management and Union.

Almost

This makes me think a deal gets done- something close to pro-rated salaries and splitting the difference in the number of games

It looks like they are far apart as to number of games: "The players proposed 114 regular season games while the owners side is said to prefer something in the 50-60 game range if they are going to pay prorated salaries. "

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlbpa-on-board-with-leagues-plan-for-regional-schedule-in-2020-season-per-report/

I think too far apart to simply split the difference.

One side is at about 2/3 of the season, the other is at 1/3.  Sounds like 80 games is the deal.  If the reason the owners want a shorter season is that they actually lose money by playing games due to costs v gate, maybe some portion of the higher salaries can be deferred, Nats-style, in order for better cash flow.

MLB has rejected the 114 game season.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2020/06/03/mlb-rejects-players-union-proposal-114-game-2020-season/3136481001/

"The Athletic reported that there will be no further offers from MLB, in effect forcing the union to bring its 114-game ask down to a level that would enhance the chances of a full postseason"

What would that number be?  MLB wants few enough games to allow a full postseason, but I would think fans want enough games to allow a meaningful postseason.   You can't be serious about a postseason when you've played 50 games.  I think 100 would be the minimum.  I don't think I'd bother watching any of the postseason of a 50 game season, Even if the Nationals were in it.  I imagine alot of fans would feel that way too, defeating the purpose of a severely limited season, which is to generate revenue from a postseason.

81 seems fair, with a July 1 start.

Do you think a postseason would be meaningful after an 81 game season?  I can't decide for sure, but I'm leaning towards no.  (I think it would be 82 rather than 81, because you probably have to have an even number.)

No matter how many games they play, there will be an asterisk next to it in the records. It is what it is.

They won’t be able to start July 1.

No one remembers the ‘81 season only had like 108 games and the teams that went to playoffs didn’t have the best overall records. Twenty years from now, no one will care.

Apparently we do. That's also 20 games more than the 81 we're talking about

There's no asterisk for the redskins superbowl wins for '82 and '87.
