Per Jeff Passan MLB set to announce that all minor leaguers will be paid $400 a week until the end of May at least, and that MLB will maintain medical benefits.

Minor leagues expected to contract 42 teams, mostly rookie and short season

Recent articles on the negotiations between MiLB and Major League Baseball (MLB) are largely inaccurate. There have been no agreements on contraction or any other issues. MiLB looks forward to continuing the good faith negotiations with MLB tomorrow as we work toward an agreement that best ensures the future of professional baseball throughout the United States and Canada.

I just want to see some of the axed teams along with the atlantic league, frontier league, and the American association (the top three independent leagues) form an independent promotion relegation entity between them with 2-3 tiers and possibly farm teams that play as the 4 pm part of a doubleheader before the big boy squad.

Can't see them opening major league facilities early and pay staff for all that. However, an independent league re-org with enterprising cities and owners emerging from any contraction could be interesting. They may end up marketing the sport to the public better than the current braintrust (sic).

Nationals are among teams releasing "hundreds" of minor leaguers today per Jeff Passan.

Across baseball, hundreds of minor league players were cut today and lost their jobs, sources tell ESPN. Hundreds more will be released over the next week. In the end, upward of 1,000 players could see their baseball careers end. The minor leagues have simply been devastated.

LAC.

It’s tough to be rich.  Constantly thinking up ways to pay no taxes on lots of income is a challenge.

The Nats apparently haven't learned much from the A's blowback. Even if they didn't reason that the price of goodwill is a comparative pittance, one would've thought the bad press and negative reaction from current players would've prompted a different course of action:

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/05/quick-hits-nationals-cards-liberatore-draft-torkelson.html

The Nationals are among the teams who released several minor leaguers within the last week, with Brittany Ghiroli and Emily Waldon of The Athletic (subscription required) reporting that the defending World Series champions cut somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 players.  As for the remaining players in Washington’s farm system, the club will be paying them $300 per week through the month of June — down from the $400 weekly stipend that has become the norm throughout baseball, as per the March agreement between the players and the league.  “The Nationals are believed to be the only Major League team paying a lower stipend amount,” Ghiroil and Waldon write, though the Athletics announced earlier this week that they would be ending the stipend entirely at the end of May.

Just as the A’s were heavily criticized for their decision, the Nats have already taken some heat for the stipend cut, considering that the total amount of money being saved is so relatively minor for a billion-dollar franchise.  As one unnamed Nationals minor league put it, even a reduced stipend is better than being released, but “For us lucky ones still getting help, it’s bittersweet. I wish the owners really weighed how much that $100 they cut us back is saving them versus how much it helps put food on the table for us and our families.”

[UPDATE: Nationals reliever Sean Doolittle tweeted that he and the rest of Washington’s Major League roster will be supporting their organization’s minor leaguers by “committing funds to make whole the lost wages from their weekly stipends.  All of us were minor leaguers at one point in our careers and we know how important the weekly stipends are for them and their families during these uncertain times.”]

leave it to baseball to piss away a little more good will for almost nothing in return. 100 per week from another 4 weeks across ~275 players (probably less with recent cuts) saves $110,000

No reason for the Lerners to pay minor leaguers when the MLB players will chip in for them.

On a serious note looks like we are headed to a much smaller minor league system all around.  Probably even fewer teams than the plan they announced last year.  In some ways it’s better to just cut these guys now and let them move on with their lives.

I was reading Living on the Black and there is a quote in it from a minor league coach to a bunch of players that they are only there to give the guys who will make it someone to play against.  These kids have been way underpaid for years to fodder to develop a few prospects. Either pay them more or just shrink the system.

Where  Nobody Your Name has a story about an old AAA catcher who was excited at even the prospect of a cup of coffee. By even spending time at AAA, he was a successful minor leaguer. The overwhelming majority is fodder- even on system to 10 lists- guys near the bottom are as likely to do anything in the majors as not. Not sure what the solution is- I don’t think the minor league economics can even support minimum wage (although, pull back the number of teams enough, and a vindictive congressman may try to repeal wage exemption)

A Larry Lucchino-type team president who can read the room could yield tremendous benefits, like having the perspective convo ahead of time and not post-headlines

Here's the list of the 39 Nats minor league cuts:

https://nationalsprospects.com/2020/06/nats-backtrack-from-minors-pay-cut-releases-revealed/

Mostly guys who had gone as far as they were ever going to go.

Analysis here:

Drew Ward was probably the biggest name released
