The Rotation 2020
« Topic Start: February 25, 2020, 04:30:31 PM »
Didn't see a thread for this yet.

Zuck notes the way things are set up now:

Quote
So, if you do the math, you'll end up with Scherzer starting opening day at the Mets, with Strasburg and Corbin following him at Citi Field. Sánchez would start the March 30 series opener at the Marlins, with the No. 5 starter the following night and Scherzer pitching the finale. That would then leave Strasburg to start the highly anticipated April 2 home opener (featuring the World Series championship banner-raising) against the Mets.

Unless their spring performances are vastly different, I think Ross gets first crack at the 5th spot with Voth as a long man.  Fedde, being the guy with an option, would have to be other-worldly.  But injuries happen, so he'll get some starts this year.

I wonder if the Yankees would be interested in either Voth or Ross.

Eh, if they were truly excess depth for us, maybe it makes sense.  The Yankees aren't going to pay anything of significance for guys that are just as big of question marks as their half dozen internal options.  The Yankees are aiming much higher if they make a move.  They're more valuable to us as we have really 4 legit starters and 3 guys in the mix after that.  Not much depth.

Pretty much. They also 103 games with the same injury issues and they added Cole. They're probably the only team in baseball that could handle Severino's injury.

Voth gets the #5 slot, Fedde to the bullpen per Rizzo.

I'm having a hard time buying that Scherzer is better than Strasburg now or for the near term future.   I was ok with the original plan of Scherzer getting opening day and Strasburg getting the home opener, but Strasburg should have got the big start tonight.

Scherzer is still the 3-time Cy Young and a team leader. I think the reigning World Series MVP should be on the mound tonight, but it isn't a hard to defend decision either way.

I agree.

Where is this clear and convincing evidence that Strasburg is miles ahead of Scherzer? Scherzer was better in ERA, FIP, K/9 and finished ahead in Cy Young voting. I think Strasburg is great and may be better than Scherzer, but I just don't see how it's so clear that one is better. If you think Strasburg should get the nod because he won the WS MVP, that's totally reasonable, but you can easily justify either decision.

I think it was the post season performance in most minds. And then Max was shelled last weekend.

The post season and the second half of the year.   Max was either out or ineffective the last 3 months of the season.

How soon we forget:
1.13 ERA in 2 starts in the NLDS (8 IP, 1 ER, 4H, 3BB, 10Ks)
0.00 ERA in 1 start in the NLCS (7 IP, 0 ER, 1H, 2BB, 11Ks)
3.60 ERA in 2 starts in the WS (10 IP, 4 ER, 12H, 7BB, 12Ks)

We can skip the wildcard game, that was awful.

I meant to phrase it that Max was out or ineffective the last 3 months of the regular season.   And that Strasburg was the better pitcher in the post season.

By all means...keep that sample size as small as possible...

So he averaged 5 innings per start in those 5 games.  You expect much more from your #1 starter and highest paid player, especially with a short bullpen.

His NLCS was exceptional, almost as good as Sanchez, but given how we clobbered the Cards...maybe it was more on them than us...

He wasn’t terrible considering the competition. Stras was just better.
