People started throwing the cups after security confiscated the snake. I heard that security said they were afraid that there was still beer in the cups and it would get on fans including kids.

Last time around fans carried the snake out of the stadium and left it on the road leading to Nats park. The defenders coach said he wanted to drink a beer after the game and add to the snake, so the team has embraced it. It was brought up at the fan event I attended a few weeks ago as well.

Lemons leading to a pick-6 will go down as one of the more memorable moments in DC football history. :)

Game play wasn’t that bad from what I saw. Certainly no worse than most of the Thursday night nfl games this past season. Kickoff, extra point, and 4th and 15 chance after scoring late are all interesting.

I think there’s a rhythm to the sports season, and I wonder if viewers will care about football in Spring any more than basketball before Christmas

The USFL has done almost nothing to put out a compelling product.  Teams sharing venues for home games looks really amateurish.  Also, idk if I'm an anomaly, but I've seen a lot more marketing for the XFL.  Wouldn't be surprised if the USFL crashes and burns really soon.

agreed. The XFL has The Rock, the USFL has memories of Jim Kelly from the 1980s. :)

The Philadelphia Stars are still not in Philly this year.  Hilarious.
I think the USFL quality might actually be better though--we shall see.

This story title probably sums it up.

https://sports.yahoo.com/amphtml/once-again-the-xfl-and-usfl-are-back-and-once-again-we-ask--why-221500034.html

Think I will be watching spring training baseball the next few weekends before March madness rather than the XFL but am probably in the minority for the country. Maybe I will check out a game here in Orlando.

if not for the team in DC, and the rabid fan base, i'm not sure i'd pay much attention to the XFL, but i'll enjoy it so long as it lasts.

USLF seems like the business plan is to get bought by the NFL as a minor league. Sounds good in theory, but college football doesn't cost the NFL a dime and no team is sending players to the minors when the average career is 3 years.

They won't be minor leagues, but they will give fringe players a chance to showcase themselves and hopefully land an NFL gig much in the same way the CFL has done for decades and the Arena Football League did when it existed, particularly for young QBs. Ben DiNucci was on the way to doing exactly that until he got spooked by lemons.

The USFL is missing a publicity-minded owner from the league's original go-round. Whatever happened to that guy?

wouldn't it be great if he came back and tried to make it a winter league again?

It’s just a crappy version of the NFL. The XFL knows the quality won’t be great, so they lean hard into gimmick. The USFL is just unapologetically bad football. I don’t think it lasts long

Sounds like NFL Europe, which they dropped like a bag of dirt.  Can't imagine why they'd think it'd go any better here in the States.

That league actually lasted 13 seasons if you count the original two years as the World League.

Not really a lot for a sports league.  The arena league lasted way longer and had very little cultural impact.

heck of a finish last night, DiNucci takes another tough-luck loss though he played well.

Very cool story on AJ McCarron:

Quite the stadium for Vegas!  Looked it up and it’s the home of their minor league soccer team.

i feel like i'm watching a high school game between the quality of the field, the non-painted end zone, and the water droplets on the camera.
