He isnt going to steal 30 bases
I'm just guessing, you meant to say 30 homeruns.  He's a lock to get 30 steals.,  He'll probably get 30 homeruns too, but it's not a sure thing like 30 steals.

Trea Turner is the best shortstop in baseball. Extend him.

Trea has already hit 18 homers and driven in 47 runs, and he has stolen 20 bases. Good chance he will steal another ten bases, only as the Nats need a base. Never just to add his total. Likely to hit at least 25 homers. Now hitting .321, which is nothing to ignore. OPS of .899. Rizzo cannot just close his eyes and point to another player, especially not to a prospect anywhere, who could replace Turner. Extend him.

he's at 20 with 40% of the season left.

Frankly I dont think hell get to either. Especially not 30 stolen bases now that Soto is hitting again.

He's not. And unless he really likes heavily deferred contracts, the Nats won't

21 stolen bases.   He won’t only get to 30 steals, he will get to 40

The Lerners aren’t paying him. Just like they won’t pay Soto or anyone else that won’t take deferred money. They’re bad owners. It just is what it is.

Yep
They have no clue how to extend players that are above average

I mean, sure, the team has a barren farm system, two monster contracts committed to pitchers who are either ineffective or ineffective/injured, and Turner is a FA after next season. They shouldn't do anything long term with the guy and try and trade him for prospects. This is the unfortunate aftermath of a franchise who bet it all on the WS and has to find a way to rebuild. It makes more sense to build around Soto since he is controlled longer and is younger.

It's sad, but thems the breaks.

They are leaking this to the press to get some trade offers for Trea.

So is the Lindor trade the expectation for a return?

If they don’t have plans to extend Turner, then they have to trade him now. His value will literally never be higher.

And that feels like a strategic leak to rustle up interest.

It's a potentially franchise-altering move to trade Turner given he's got another year left. And it means we are punting on next season as well.

My opinion is we should punt next season. It would require a massive, franchise altering offseason shake up and a lot of good luck to compete next season. That type of shake up isn't going to happen in a labor fight offseason.

My #1 preference is Turner gets an extension, but that seemingly isn't happening. If they're not going to try to extend him, then let's be cold blooded and make a move today that maybe pays off and puts us in a better place in 2023 to compete with Juan Soto and create a foundation to help convince him to stick around.

Strategic leak? They don’t pay anyone except pitchers who will take deferred money. Everybody knew they were going to do this. There’s nothing strategic about this. Fans will finally realize just how bad the Lerners are when they let Soto walk. It’s going to take something that catastrophic but that’s coming too. I have no idea why Rizzo stays here?

the galaxy brain move for mark is to sell turner now and then sabotage CBA negotiations so 2022 is a shortened season

Jayson Werth. That is the counter to your argument. Honestly, have any of those position players that the Nats drafted and/or developed here gone on to be productive players elsewhere?

Wouldn't it be ironic if we used Turner to fleece another team after we fleeced the Rays to get Turner and Ross?

Interesting to note that Rene Rivera was part of that trade, going from San Diego to Tampa.

Thats the floor. When the Mets traded for him, Lindor was in his final year of team control. Next season is Turner's last year of team control

Dont need to sabotage them. They'll do it to themselves. I think we can officially call it the Mookie Maneuver

The Souza that keeps on souzaing.  Can’t wait to tell my grandkids how we turned a little known AAAA outfielder who made one great catch one time into a chain of dynasty level pieces that form our core for decades.

If some team called the Nationals and said they wanted Turner and Strasburg and in turn would send the Nats a couple Low A fliers, I'd have to think about it.
