Extend Turner
« Topic Start: January 11, 2020, 12:04:49 AM »
I think Turner should be the priority to do an extension with. Buy out his two (or three) remaining arb years and lock him up long term. He’s one of the key members of the franchise, and it would be nice if ownership showed the fans they can lock up one of the homegrown (mostly) position players. I also think he’s due for a breakout this year.  I think he’ll have a 5 or 6 win season this year, which will only drive up his value. Plus he’s the only key piece not repped by Boras. Get it done.

No. He’s a below average shortstop. He never gets on base to be a top of the line up guy. I will pass  :mg:

Devil's Advocate: Turner's best asset, speed, will fade soon. Perhaps we are better off not spending big to keep him and should just let him hit the market?

I’m guessing this is a clumsy joke? :lmao: Over .350 OBP this year, .348 career OBP. Best “he doesn’t get on base” comment since someone said the same about Eaton.

He already has curtailed his base stealing, and has never been a good bunter.  I think he can develop more power and be a solid #3 hitter, and possibly transition to 2B, or even CF in a couple years.

Turner’s offensive stats are improving. OBP and Slugging both up last year. Serviceable defensively. No replacement on the horizon.

He's a very fine player we stole in a trade, will give us a ton of value at a premium position, and will likely always be nitpicked because he didn't do more. That's the problem when you show flashes of every tool, but only part of the time for each. No one is ever like, "why didn't Asdrubal Cabrera do more with his talent" but then you look at them both as hitters and don't see much of a difference.

What would a turner contract look like?   How would the aav compare to the next 2 arb years?

I am hoping the future middle infield is Turner at 2B and Luis Garcia at SS, but count me in as a guy who would like to see Turner locked up.

Assume he gets $12/$16 over the next two arb years? You could probably offer like 7/$140?

Bogaerts got 6/$120 with one fewer arb years I believe.

Turner was a league average hitter in 2018. Last year he had an OPS+ of 113. The impressive thing for me is that his OBP went up despite his walk percentage going down and his average went up even though he hit for more power with a higher slugging percentage. If he can get the walls back up to 2018 levels that would be great.

And all of this despite playing all of his games but 4 with a jacked up finger.
I think he’s slowly climbing back to 2016 levels of performance. No, I don’t think he will be a 7 win player but 5-6 WAR, completely reasonable. Which would make him a top 5 shortstop in MLB.

Lock the man up before he plays a full season where he puts it together and then becomes unaffordable. He’s far enough away from free agency and has enough uncertainty from his injury history that it will be worthwhile for him to consider taking a payday.

I got a call from Trea when he heard about this thread, and similar threads for position players like Desmond, Harper and Rendon.  His reaction was:

Tuner interviewed on nationals talk:

Quote
Trea Turner on the idea of an extension: "At the end of the day, I like it here. I don't think the grass is always greener on the other side, per se, and I'm happy where I'm at. If it comes to that, I'll be happy to play here hopefully my entire career if they'll let me

Rendon was always an odd interview. I think he was uncomfortable in the spotlight, or, he just disliked taking the time to do the cliched baseball bits, like spit canned lines and have his shower held up.Either way, he definitely doesn't present the typical superstar profile compared to most big names.

Turner could still be a good player post-30 when his wheels slow down, but a great player?  No.  I'd be happy to keep him, but we can't pay him into his 30s like he's one of the fastest players in the game.

Rendon is not the first or last player to leave a team for FA. Why are people taking it so personally? Some guys leave. Some guys stay.
