So, here is an old fart music question: I am listening to Layla right now, and blown away by Duane, which begs the question, which musician who died prematurely from the classic rock genre would you think have recorded the most interesting music had he or she lived a normal length of days?  I think I could make a case for Duane just for how the ABB would have turned out plus his work with other musicians. Hendrix, of course,on his own creativity,  and I  will tip my hat to Ronnie Van Zandt for his group, but if you give me Steve Gaines, too.

SRV is the most facile guitarist of all time.  He would have made great music.

Good one...

Pearl would have been interesting for her influence on women as fronts for groups. SRV is one of my go tos, and I guess he only had recording contracts for 6 years. His wor work on Bowie's let's dance was awesome, but I don't think he had the collaborations that Duane had. Duane had the studio musician period before ABB, and songs like Someone Loan Me a Dime (Boz Scaggs) are just fantastic due to Duane.

I know it is not classic rock, so it is outside the parameters of the question, but I was genuinely surprised when I was putting together the 26 September birthday list in the GDT to learn that George Gershwin was only 38 when he died.

In the classic rock genre, I would have to place Jimi Hendrix at the top of any list, but I agree with most of the ones you guys have cited; at least the ones I'm actually familiar with.

EDIT TO ADD: Jim Morrison, died aged 27 years old.

The "27 Club" is pretty extensive.  Amy Winehouse is the most recent inductee that I can think of.

I love me some of Gershwin's concertos...

yes.  What hit me about Duane Allman was the collaborations, which is why Layla prompted the question in mind. Also, plane / motorcycle crashes seem more freaky than drugs for me.

John Bonham because it killed Led Zep

Not classic rock but Bradley Nowell’s death still sucks.

Sid Vicious? Interesting music?  You must like watching building implosions, too.

He and Limbaugh conversed for 2 hours without taking a commercial break.
