Alex Trebek

'I knew him when': In 1969 he was emceeing a high school quiz show on CBC called Reach for the Top (like It's Academic or the old GE College Bowl) and that season they decided to match the top three teams from Canada against the top three teams from Hawaii, winners in a similar telly series called Hawaii High. This international series was titled Trans World Top Team and was also emceed by Trebek. I was on one of the Hawaii teams (in fact the one I was on was the only Hawaii side to win any of the games), and the trip to Canada for the sessions there was my first ever trip outside the USA.

The Pacific was a great place to be as a kid. My dad was Army so I spent 2 years in the Philippines along with some time in Germany and Massachusetts. Pretty cool that you got to meet Alex Trebek.

Radford (graduated 1970). My senior year was my only term there, since we had moved to Hawaii in 1969 after my father got his orders.

I figured you to be a Punahou guy.  :)

We had a guy in our office there who always brag he’s about going there.

My sister (four years my junior) did go to Punahou for two years (then my father got orders again - our childhood was rather peripatetic, as is often the case with service brats).

Ft. Shafter?  Camp Smith?

You and I both graduated in 1970, but we went to different schools together...  :D

Yep. I'm the sort that's got to be doing something (and my present job is quite steady and the pay keeps me in beer and airline tickets quite nicely).

Defense Communications Agency Pacific (DCA Pac), located on Schofield Barracks. How I ended up at Radford was that we were staying within its jurisdiction in our first few months in Hawaii (the school term began right after we arrived).

Further evidence of what a small world it is: the former headquarters of the overall DCA organisation is located right next door to the apartment block I've resided in since 1979 (my father also worked at that DCA HQ, 1962-66).

Mapquest says it's a 20 minute ride going down H2. If you go down Kamehameha Hwy it's 27 minutes. ;)

There was no H2 back then...you had Kam Hwy...a 1970 Kam Hwy...at peak hours...had to be a RPITA...

I challenge anyone to do it even today in 25 minutes...it's unpossible with traffic...

Hawaii was of course a lot less populous back in 1970 (770,000 at 1970 census, about 1.32m now). It's been a long time now (and I haven't been back since 1972) but I just don't recall it being that onerous a trip - an HRT bus to downtown Wahiawa followed by a shuttle to Schofield (or vice versa).

Tommy Heinsohn, 86.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/11/10/tommy-heinsohn-obit/

when he wasn't just getting on miscarriages of justice inflicted on the Celtics by refs and crybabies on the Lakers, he had some great insights into the game.

some great quotes here:

First to go among Cousy, Russell, and Heinsohn.

Don’t remember much of him as a player. More as a coach and announcer. He was a terrible homer. Even on national broadcasts.
