I’m really surprised they played games yesterday.

I don't think this warranted cancellations, maybe for the Lakers, but not anyone else.  Pretty much every game opened with a variation of the 8 / 24 violation.

I really was too.  I guess because the news came out just as some games were about to get underway made it tough for them to cancel, and if they let the afternoon ones happen they had to let the evening ones happen too, but yea that surprised me.

$$$ - not just for NBA owners, but money spent by people who made plans to attend the games can't just be put aside

They cancelled the Lakers game tomorrow.  That's appropriate.  The last time NBA games were cancelled was when John Kennedy was assassinated.  This does not rise to the same level.

Not a good comparison, for unlike JFK, only 1 game is cancelled and not all NBA games, as in 1963.

UConn’s women’s team held a seat on their bench tonight for Gigi. She had talked about wanting to play there.

Canceling the game tomorrow is weird to me, I mean the day it happened? That I would understand, but canceling one game two days later when the fans of the Lakers and Kobe pretty much WANT an outlet to wrap their sorrow in? I don’t get the rationale.

They are doing out of respect for the family.  His wife has not made a statement yet and the Lakers are waiting on her. I think a few days of mourning are ok for the team and fans. With the recovery effort slow it might be a while before his funeral.

I said they aren’t comparable.

My son put on tonight’s replay on ESPN of Kobe’s final game. We had to turn it off after seeing his family court side cheering him on. Just too hard to watch.

Holy smokes. My Dad would have been 100 this year.  Boggles my mind anyone can live that long. He seemed to have most of his faculties also.

The population distribution for age length has its outliers - particularly those who can afford top medical care, such as at UCLA

Read that; you make it to 91 and then die that way--sucks.

RIP Mirella Freni - https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/mirella-freni-showstopping-opera-star-for-more-than-five-decades-dies-at-84/2020/02/09/1d9d5b1e-613e-11e9-bfad-36a7eb36cb60_story.html

She started out in light roles like Susanna, Micaela and Juliette but soon moved into heavier roles; her most acclaimed performances were the Puccini sets she recorded opposite fellow Modena native Luciano Pavarotti - La Boheme, Tosca and Madama Butterfly. Kept going well past her fifties too.

(Hadn't realised that Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Jessye Norman had died within the past few months till I saw the links in Freni's online Post obituary - the world of opera and vocal music have been hit hard recently.)

Reminded me of something I used to say.    Riding a motorcycle, people thought I was/am nuts.    Always told 'em, "I'd rather die with motorcycle throttle in my hand than a TV remote."
