No local connection. If they want to be inclusive and local- buy the greys from whoever owns the rights
So the Redskins name had a local connection?

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29411648/coach-ron-rivera-says-working-redskins-owner-new-nicknames

“Rivera told the Post it is important that a new nickname respects Native American culture and traditions, while also saluting the military. Rivera is the son of an Army officer.”

So why does the name have to respect the military?  And why does it have to have anything to do with native Americans at all?  Can’t they just pick a fun name?  I would suggest a local poll but last time that happened it resulted in the Wizards.

Salty Dogs would be good.

Sounds to me like they will go with Redtails. I read that three of the first five admitted airmen were from Washington DC.  They keep red in the name and make it sound like they are supporting the military and African Americans at the same time.   Value of the franchise goes up again and new apparel can be sold. Danny will be pleased. And now he can negotiate a stadium deal with the city.

I think one reason for the comment about respecting Indians is that Snyder would like to find a way to keep the current logo.

I have the solution. Sell the team to a tribal casino conglomerate.  He helps out a particular population, he helps out fans who still care about local football, and he cashes out before general interest dips and concussion realities have a house of cards effect

Because football loves wrapping itself in the flag- somehow sitting on your ass all Sunday downing bud light like water while inhaling wings is a profoundly patriotic act

'Salty' is also Australian slang for a salt-water crocodile (more dangerous to humans than the fresh-water kind).

I read the team minority owners are looking to sell.  How much does WNFF have?  Maybe we can get in and then force Danny out.

Sea Dogs was one of the selections for the Wizards when they held a fan vote.  They never released the results of that vote, and there was lots of speculation that Sea Dogs got the most votes as there was an effort by Don and Mike and others to get people to vote for that name because it was so dumb.

I heard yesterday that Rivera has been talking to Danny for a month to get him to change the name.  If Snyder renames the team, and that leads to a successful effort to build a new stadium on the RFK site and bring the team back to D.C., he's going to undo a lot of the damage he's done over the last decade or so.

6 months too late- DC isn't going to have the money or the desire to subsidize a stadium

...especially with the supporter base as diminished as it is now. They could build a new ground the size of RFK (it seated 55,745 when the Redskins played there) and have room for everybody - heck, right now they could fit everyone into Nats Park (capacity a bit over 41k).

And as far as subsidies and cost to the city are concerned, they'll soften that blow by requiring STH to purchase personal seat licences, something FedEx Field did not require (at least during my STH tenure there, 2000-10). And don't forget that a large portion of the seating is going to be premium/luxury - 'Washington Redskins' may be a horrendously damaged brand nowadays but the NFL is still the ticket.

The military is an important local industry. I like it when a team name reflects something unique or special to the region, rather than something generic like Wizards or something wholly inappropriate for the region like Kings.

"Warriors" with an APC or F-22 as a logo would be to the DC area like "RubberDucks" is to Akron.

for municipalities, I'm not so sure- it's 8 home games plus concerts, none of which the neighborhood wants

Yeah I've become pretty convinced that as far as principles of land use go, an NFL stadium is simply not a good use of land in any urban center. Nevertheless, a lot of urban centers have NFL stadiums in them.

The massive parking lot required is the real killer.

look at where the new ones have gone - Inglewood isn't exactly desirable real estate, the 49ers went to Santa Clara, the Cowboys, Giants and Jets are still in the suburbs. The Vikings, Falcons, and Raiders are all downtown, but the era of cities falling over themselves to keep teams in urban centers seems to be over

We can't commemorate anything that happened during times of segregation because it glorifies segregation?  Even for you, that's dense.

They may be racist but that’s not where the name cane from.  Does this mean we have to ban the word?
