We don't need Adams or any other lefty 1B platoon.  Howie can hit righties more than fine.  Him and Zim are both old guys that need "load management," so just keep them rotating and sit whoever needs the rest the most.  I wouldn't count on playing Howie at 2B other than a real emergency situation.

I did. He was a clutch bat that won us the NLDS and WS. So im glad he can hopefully retire as a Nat.

So i think with Howie back that is 1st base covered once Ryan resigns.

The "culture" matters.  Davey does a great job of promoting a balance of focus and hard work with being a family that has fun playing the game.  Then the players that are here now also fit that very well.  It's important that anybody brought in fits into this clubhouse, because I think the clubhouse culture/chemistry is 100% why they were able to go from 19-31 to Champs.

I remember his interview where he said his last club left a bad taste in his mouth and he wanted to retire. He took a chance and signed with the Nats and fell back in love with baseball. He said he loves playing in DC. He's a great guy and I'm glad he's back.

I'm guessing at $6.25 million they see him playing a pretty large role.  I wonder if this means they won't try to bring Zimmerman back and instead make Howie the primary 1B?

look at it this way - it's less than any of the veteran starters last year except Gomes/Suzuki, and that was $11MM in that tandem.

I think his role is to split time with Kieboom, pinch hit, and play for RZ if RZ goes down.  I'd be surprised if he was the primary guy at any position.

I think he's replacing Adams basically.  He's no longer a good 2B, and it's taxing on him physically.  Howie hits righties much better than Adams or really any big lefty bat we could go get to platoon with Zim.  Why the obsession over a righty/lefty duo?  We have 2 older guys that need rest but can hit, especially Howie.  Let him and Zim share 1B and whoever doesn't start is a very nice first option off the bench to pinch hit.

I think Howie's signing is unrelated to the Rendon  situation.  If Stras signs soon, then it means Rendon ain't coming back.

We all love Howie, but that's a ton of money for a part time player who is injury prone.  I guess he can play 2B only on occasion.  Hopefully he can stay healthy.  Cross your fingers.

Today is Eaton's birthday!

Rosenthal says Howie turned down guaranteed two year deals to return to Washington.

370 PAs is about a 2/3 regular.  Yes, part time, but more of a super-utility than a backup depth piece who spots a starter once or twice a week.  he's a 4 -5 day a week player.

Not that fWAR is the be all / end all, but he's put up 6 WAR over the past 3 years, including one where he was hurt early and his time in Philly.  There is a lot of value in this signing even if he's only a 1.5 WAR kind of player (half the value he provided last year).
