Antietam Illumination 2019 - December 7
« Topic Start: November 27, 2019, 09:52:11 AM »
The annual Antietam Battlefield Illumination is scheduled for Saturday, December 7. Volunteers place 23,110 candle luminaries across the battlefield, each one representing a casualty of that battle. Row after row after row of luminaries, as far as the eye can see. It’s very powerful.

It starts at 6pm, and usually runs till midnight. You drive through the 5-mile course. Be warned that this is a very popular event, and you can wait in line in your car for 2+ hours. But it’s well worth it.

There are also usually re-enactors posted at various points along the course. Last time we were there, there was a small group of them huddled around the campfire on one of the fields, lit only by the flames of their small fire. Thousands of luminaries surrounded them. It looked like a small group of the living surrounded by the spirits of thousands of their dead comrades. It brought home what those men faced, and the terrible toll of that battle.
