Ben Braymer, 2016 18th rounder LHP starting pitcher who is one of the best draft picks (in terms of value vis-a-vis draft position) the team has had this decade.  He has now risen to AAA’s rotation … where he proceeded to get shelled thsi year (7.20 ERA in 13 starts).  Hard to tell if that’s the level or the PCL; i’m going to go latter since he maintained sub 3.00 ERAs at most of his stops as he ascended the minors.  I think its worth protecting a home grown lefty starter who they drafted and paid a paltry $100k signing bonus for.

Braymer, 25, led Washington’s Minor League system with 26 starts, ranked third with 139.0 innings pitched and sixth with 116 strikeouts in his fourth professional season in 2019. Between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Fresno, he went 4–10 with a 4.53 ERA.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound left-hander started the 2019 season with the Harrisburg Senators where he went 4–4 with a 2.51 ERA (22 ER/79.0 IP) and 69 strikeouts in 13 starts. He allowed two earned runs or fewer in 11 of those 13 outings. He held opposing batters to a .190 batting average (56-for-294) with just seven home runs, including just two homers across his final eight Eastern League starts.

On June 26, Braymer was promoted to Triple-A Fresno and went 0–6 with a 7.20 ERA (48 ER/60.0 IP) in 13 starts. He capped his 2019 campaign in strong fashion, posting a 3.43 ERA (8 ER/21.0 IP) and recording 17 strikeouts in his last four starts of the season.

Braymer was Washington’s 2018 Minor League co-Pitcher of the Year leading Washington’s Minor League system with a 2.28 ERA while going 9–3 with two saves in 28 games (11 starts) between Single-A Hagerstown and Single-A Potomac. He struck out 118 batters — third-most in Washington’s system — in 114.2 innings pitched. Opposing batters hit .219 against him, including a .174 average by left-handed batters along the way.

Selected in the 18th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Auburn (AL) University, Braymer is 18–17 with a 3.64 ERA and 8.9 strikeouts per 9.0 innings across 75 professional games (52 starts) since joining the organization in 2016.

DFA'd to make room for Parra on the 40-man, I'll keep this open on the assumption that he clears waivers and ends up back at Rochester.

Saw Braymer pitch a couple of innings. He has grown a small pot belly, but did not pitch well: 3 innings, 5 hits, 5 earned runs, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. There is no speed gun and not electronic strike-zone box, so the video missed some of the things I have gotten used to in MLB. Current ERA is about .725. Back when I collected baseball cards in the 1950s, .725 was not good.

Have to admire someone who can get a beer belly started in their 20s. Took me years longer.

Even Walter Johnson would be envious of that ERA...guessing you meant 7.25...

Braymer had a good August. Pitcher of the month. Nats need a lefty starter.

Quote
Rochester Red Wings left-handed pitcher Ben Braymer has been named the Triple-A East Pitcher of the Month for August, Minor League Baseball announced.

Braymer was 4-0 with a 3.09 ERA (11 ER, 32.0 IP) in six appearances (five starts) with 18 hits, three home runs, two hit batters, 15 walks, and 21 strikeouts. He allowed two hits or fewer in four games and had three scoreless starts. Braymer won three consecutive appearances from August 14-25. Six of the 11 runs he allowed came in one outing. The former 18th round selection by the Nationals in 2016 out of Auburn University is now 6-7 with a 5.56 ERA in 19 games (16 starts) this season.

This is the first career Pitcher of the Month honor for Braymer. He is the first Rochester Player/Pitcher of the Month since OF Jaylin Davis earned International League Player of the Month in July, 2019. The last Red Wings pitcher to win the award was LHP Francisco Liriano in July, 2008.

Braymer with a 9.39 ERA after getting shelled tonight, which puts him in a good position to step in for Corbin.
