Rule 5 Eligibles (2019)
« Topic Start: November 12, 2019, 02:41:40 PM »
Rule 5 draft protection deadline is November 20.  Here's who is likely to be eligible via https://www.federalbaseball.com/2019/11/11/20953257/breaking-down-prospects-washington-nationals-could-protect-from-rule-5-draft

Sterling Sharp, RHP
Ben Braymer, LHP
Andrew Lister, RHP
Nick Banks, OF
Andrew Lee, RHP
Taylor Gushue, C

FB says Sharp is likely to be placed on the 40-man, seems Banks may end up on the 40-man too after his AFL performance.

Hopefully the Redskins can pick up Sharp because even though he's old Haskins could really use some more weapons.

I think this one has a better fastball. :)

Yeah, but does he have a brother who plays a good TE?

Zuck says Braymer is the only addition to the 40-man.  Kind of surprised they'd expose Sharp.

I think with Sharp they are gambling a bit that, while he may get taken in the Rule 5 draft, he's not ready for another team to keep him on a roster all year.  They probably figure they get him back by the end of the spring and avoid burning an option this year.

No surprise that Sharp is the guy they predict would be the target among the Nats unprotected.

2 names that look interesting to me are Leonardo Rivas from the Angels and Eli White from the Rangers.  Both are middle infielders with speed who can play the OF, so I think there might be room as a 26th man to carry them for pinch running.  White has some pop (14HRs / 14 SBs) but saw his rep drop after the Rangers got him for Profar and he moved up to AAA.  Rivas has less power but a heck of an OBP.  Especially if we let Adrian Sanchez and Difo go, these would be intriguing depth picks.

I'd rather take a flyer on one of those rule 5 guys than return Difo or Sanchez, who have essentially 0 upside.

Nats' top-30 prospects who are eligible to be drafted:

13) Sterling Sharp, RHP
21) Steven Fuentes, RHP
22) Malvin Pena, RHP
25) Gilbert Lara, SS/3B
27) Telmito Agustin, OF
28) Jhonatan German, RHP

Nats make no pick in the MLB phase of the Rule 5 draft.  Lose Sterling Sharp to the Marlins (#3 pick).  Select Manuel Geraldo from the Giants in the AAA phase.

https://www.mlb.com/breaking-news/rule-5-draft-2019

Geraldo had an off year in the California high A league at age 22 after a good year in the Sally league in 2018.

Marlins DFA Sterling Sharpe, if he clears waivers we get him back.
