TBH, that stretch from Stras to C Kieboom produced 9 guys who at least had a cup of coffee in the majors.  5 guys who have been all stars (I think Storen made it). Meyer was flipped for a guy who started for us for 2-3 years (Span).  Goodwin has had a 13 HR and a 17 HR season the two season he had over 200 PAs.  We knock Rizzo for not coming up with late round magic, but he probably has a better yield from his 1st round than average.

And don't forget that Giolito, along with the guy after Kieboom, Dunning, got us Adam Eaton, who had his injury struggles in Washington but still is a .288/.377/.425 hitter here and had a pretty good World Series performance.

Since (A) the Nats just beat them and (B) everyone praises their analytical approach, for comparison below are the Astros first round picks over the same period, though I'm not sure when Houston truly began their "modern" approach. They went to the World Series in 2005 and their stretch of last place 100-loss seasons was 2011-13.

2005 (34) - Brian Bogusevic
2005 (38) - Eli Iorg
2006 (23) - Maxwell Sapp
2007 - no pick
2008 (10) - Jason Castro
2008 (38) - Jordan Lyles
2009 (21) - Jiovanni Mier
2010 (8 ) - Delino DeShields
2010 (19) - Mike Foltynewicz
2010 (33) - Mike Kvasnicka
2011 (11) - George Springer
2012 (1) - Carlos Correa
2012 (41) - Lance McCullers Jr.
2013 (1) - Mark Appel
2014 (1) - Brady Aiken - did not sign
2014 (37) - Derek Fisher
2015 (2) - Alex Bregman
2016 (17) - Forrest Whitley
2017 (15) - J.B. Bukauskas
2018 (28) - Seth Beer
2019 (32) - Korey Lee

Eli Iorg (2005-09, highest level AAA), Maxwell Sapp (2006-08, A), Jiovanni Mier (2009-18, AAA), Mike Kvasnicka (2010-15, AA) and Mark Appel (2013-17, AAA, traded to Phillies in the 2015 Ken Giles trade) never made it to the Major League. Bukauskas and Beer were part of the package sent to the Diamondbacks for Zach Greinke.

So they had some stand-out picks, but also quite a few busts.

And right before that was the Aaron Crow fiasco.  I still can't believe that didn't cause Trader Jim to get fired right then and there (when you take that in context of how awful the on-field product was at the time).

Jeff Luhnow was hired before the 2012 season, so I'd assume that's when the analytical approach probably took hold (since Ed "I hate stats" Wade was his predecessor).

This would absolve their "modern" front office of a lot of those busts circa '05-'10, but interestingly enough, it also means they don't get credit for picking Springer.

Ironically Ed Wade drafted the core of the Phillies team that won five straight division titles. Of course he was gone by that time. Since then their drafting has been terrible.

some guys we could be looking at with pick #22:

Robert Hassell - high school outfielder, top of the class prep hit tool, vandy commit
https://dugoutedgebaseball.blogspot.com/2020/04/2020-draft-profile-robert-hassell.html

Cole Wilcox - seen him mocked to us a lot, we took a late round flyer on him a few years back, high upside college arm late in the first sounds like a Rizzo play
https://dugoutedgebaseball.blogspot.com/2020/04/2020-draft-profile-cole-wilcox.html

Cade Cavalli - mid 90s with a power arsenal, iffy command (improved drastically in limited 2020 action), inability to dominate in college, Ace upside

I dont see Hassell signing. At least not for a ton of money. Vandy churns out top level talent. He could conceivably jump up 15+ picks after college. And considering that this season and next season are tenuous at best, he would be better suited to going to Vanderbilt, working out, getting ahead on classes, and having a far more relaxed life than a minor league wondering if hes going to get a stipend next month.

I could see Wilcox being the pick, simply because he's a Boras guy

My pipe dream would be Casey Martin falling to us in the second round. Worst case scenario, he is Trea Turner's replacement. Best case, he comes up in 2021 and takes over second/third, and we end up with a lineup that has Trea Turner, Victor Robles, and Casey Martin all trying to steal 30+ bases.

Every high school player who has a chance to play for Tim Corbin at Vandy should take it. That guy is one of the best coaches of any sport in this country IMO.

Could be an interesting year to take a player that has an injury and needs time to recuperate. They're likely not playing until next March

They need to hit on a pitcher.  They took a pitcher last year, right?

Every mock says Wilcox. He seems like Rutledge. Which concerns me as this team has struggled to develop pitching

It's also a pitcher heavy draft. With basically no season this year, the Nats could take an injury risk later on. I'd love to see Dingler, Hendrick, or Howard fall to the Nats

These picks are surprising but also not surprising in the way I would expect.

I took Asa Lacy was 1-1 with the Tigers in OOTP but he blew his arm out. :/
