I remember being pissed off the first time they acquired Bonifacio.  He was an annoying, runty one-tool player who Bowden apparently thought could learn to play a bunch of positions decently despite him having obvious deficiencies at all of them and not being able to hit.

Needless to say I'm not enamored of signing a 35-year-old version of a guy whose only skill was speed.  The worst thing that could happen would be him succeeding in the minors.  There's no downside here unless he has to actually play baseball.

he's org depth in case we can't sign Difo or Sanchez after they get DFA'd

Yes.  And if we can't sign those guys, suddenly he starts looking like someone who might need to appear in a major league game.

Now, please don't interrupt my semi-unhinged rant about Emilio Bonifacio again.  He's exactly the kind of awful, Brian Bixler-like player fans should be compensated for having to watch play, not the opposite.  Jim Bowden should be forced to watch him hitting 4-3s and noodle-arming throws until his eyes bleed.

Cant be true but it seemed like Bonafacio hit .500 against us after we traded him. He tortured the Nats pitching for years.

His career slash line against the Nats is .251/.322/.315, which is very close to the same level of abject suckitude he exhibited against everyone else (.256/.313/.333).

Don't doubt your numbers but I always thought of Emilio and Bour as Nats-killers. LOtta big hits.

That's the way I remember it too. Seems like we lost to the Marlins a lot then.

I remember the famous 3 headed monster at 2d - The Attorney General (Alberto Gonzalez), Anderson Hernandez, and  Bonifacio.  Bonihernalez.  A monstrosity if I ever saw one.

Dusty to Stros.

It took extraordinary circumstances to bring Dusty back into a Major League dugout.  I'm happy for him.  I hope he teaches those arrogant MFers some life lessons.

Yea. He'll get them back to the World Series. That'll teach em.

Betts to Padres rumored to be close.

Why don’t these organizations ever learn? If organizations like the Red Sox or Cardinals are willing to trade or let a star go, it’s a red flag.

FWIW, Comments section says the guy has a bunch of sources, most notably in the Padres organization.

All I see from his is that there is a "sense" that a trade is more likely than ever, which isn't breaking news or even news.

per MLB.com's email blast,  which may be Heyman, it is sort of down to whether SD kicks in $20MM to cover 25% of Myers contract or they kick in $40MM to cover 50%.  That's a pretty small gap, I think.  The Red Sox need to drop about $25 - 30MM to get below the CBT threshold, which is the goal. That said, if Margot is in the deal, then they could move JBJ, too.

He might! But it's just a passing comment IMO until it's got more legs to it. You can find countless guys with sources in different organizations on message boards or on Twitter. Hell, I have sources in the NYY front office and could have "broken" vague trades or signings the way this guy is.

Pirates have an operating payroll of $43 million. MLB owners DGAF and are just raking in the dough. I feel bad for Pirates fans and any player in their system, because you know that you will have to leave to make any decent money and most likely you will have to fight for every dollar from the organization. I think I read that the Pirates have never signed a big free agent. Cool owners.

The Marlins (may) be spending more in the future, but legitimately, there's always at least 1-3 teams that completely punt on payroll and players and the rest do everything in their power to keep salaries down across the board. Next work stoppage is going to be intense.

between teams that won't spend, manipulation of service time, and teams that are smart enough to no longer pay for past performance, a stoppage seems inevitable this time around

Despite all that the average MLB salary has gone up quite a bit. Not sure about median salary?  So I don’t think the players will have much sympathy from the “average” fan.

Even the mean has declined every year under the current CBA despite the minimum salary going up every year.  That - and what the graph you provided would look like next to owners' collective profits on the same time scale - are what really will matter.

Also, when it comes to the choice between millionaires who provide actual entertainment and billionaires who rake the profits, I know where my sympathies lie.

The mean has gone down slightly the last two years after a big increase in 2016. Don’t have the numbers but the increase seems to far out run inflation since the last CBA.

I’m not sympathetic to either side.

The current CBA began in 2017.   It far outpaced inflation over the life of the graph you gave (even with the recent decline) but players in 2021 won't and shouldn't care what happened back in 2016.
