Anyone else hear Boras throwing his voice?

It's either Boras or Satan. Hard to tell them apart sometimes.

We can't afford? Ted Lerner and family as of 12/7/2019  have a realtime new worth of 5.5Billion. Mark Lerner stop BSing. Bring Stras and Rendon back! You CAN afford!

The Nationals' 2019 opening day payroll of $185 million ranks fifth in the majors, behind the Red Sox, Cubs, Yankees and Dodgers, according to the Associated Press' annual calculations.

The 2020 MLB salary cap = $208 million.  So doesn't that mean the Nats could increase payroll by $23 million without going over the salary cap ?

In 2019, Strasburg was paid $31 million and Rendon was paid $19 million.

Can you imagine making $19 million a year, let alone $31 million?

Nats payroll in 2019 was $204.4 million. Just under the luxury tax. If no Strasburg or Rendon they have that money to spend. Keep in mind guys in arbitration years salaries are increasing such as Trea Turner.

"They" have plenty of money to spend, cap or no cap.
Why do fans accept the idea that it is so critical to stay under the cap?
Just because the owners want more $ for themselves and collude by adhering to artificial constraints doesn't mean we have to accept it without objection.

Quote
Nats announce they’ve signed right-handed reliever Kyle Finnegan to a major league deal. Finnegan, 28, has not yet appeared in an MLB game, but posted very strong numbers in ‘19 between AA and AAA, including in the hitter-friendly PCL. Last two seasons, he’s 28-for-30 in save ops

Quote
Finnegan last season between the Athletics’ AA and AAA affiliates: 2.31 ERA in 50 2/3 IP, 1.145 WHIP, 12.8 K/9, 14 saves and only 3 HR allowed. And again, 28 innings of those 50 2/3 were in the AAA Pacific Coast League, where hitters dominate due to conditions/ballparks.

$31M is only 3% of $5.8B. And they would probably make it back in profits.

I totally agree. Especially for a contending team. Was just pointing out that MG’s number for 2019 was not correct.

Staying under the luxury face line seems to be the Lerners goal.

The Lerners' personal worth is not the Washington Nationals operating budget. Also, your math doesn't look right.

I don’t know of any other team who doesn’t attempt to stay under.  It’s not really all about going over one year but if you set yourself up to be over every year for a while, you end up in a mess.  The Red Sox are in a bad spot now without an easy way out.  Even the Yankees are trying hard to stay under it.

I don’t believe the luxury tax will survive the next collective bargaining agreement.  I fully expect a strike in 2021.

Via mlbtr:

The right-handed Finnegan has spent the entirety of his professional career as an Athletics farmhand. In 2019 he recorded a 2.31 ERA with 14 saves while splitting time between Triple-A Las Vegas and Double-A Midland. The 28-year-old showed a huge uptick in strikeouts after a 2016 migration to the bullpen, as evidenced by his 72 Ks in just 52.2 innings of work last year (12.8 strikeouts per nine).

They also have a recent world title to go along with two in the previous decade. As a fan I could not be too upset.

We all know the bullpen has been a problem. Picking up Hudson last year was a real find for Rizzo. It’s hard to do that every year. I can’t blame them for not signing Harper or anyone else to a big long term deal. It’s the unwillingness to go a little over the line when you are close that bothers me. And now since it worked out one year they will undoubtedly try and replicate that.

In double A at least he has also been pitching against guys much younger than him. Sometimes a veteran junkballer can get strike outs against prospects.

Zuck notes it's a league minimum deal and he has options so he can be put in the minors.  Low risk deal for the Nats.

cash payroll in contrast to AAV that is used for luxury tax purposes?  Max had a very high payroll number last year, I think due to a deferral being due.

As for luxury tax limits, I think the impact of exceeding it gets worse in terms of lost international bonus pool money and draft pick compensation.  IOW, eventually it hits your ability to sign and develop players.
