Great, excellent reporting from Heyman. A contending team is looking at the three best players on the market, and can spend whatever they want, but want to remain in a price range. Finally, something new to report. Hot Stove twitter is barely better than trade deadline twitter, which is only a little bit better than spring training twitter.

Finally, some actual news - Paul Menhart accepts an extension to stay on as pitching coach.  Unless someone gets hired away between now and OD, the entire 2019 coaching staff, minus Assistant Hitting Coach Joe Dillon, will return for 2020.

Why excellent? You really don't want Henley back?

I was kind of shocked at this bit from this article:
Quote
4. Who's more likely to return to the Nats, Stephen Strasburg or Rendon?
Survey says: Rendon 12; Strasburg 3

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28160749/hot-stove-survey-mookie-betts-block-gerrit-cole-crack-300m-mlb-gms-insiders-weigh-in

I was feeling pretty sure that Strasburg would be back, and Rendon gone.  Although I think I remember similar executives and insiders saying Harper would be back with the Nats this year.

Stephen Vogt signs a one year deal for $5 million with Arizona.  I thought he would have made for a decent pairing with Suzuki if we weren't bringing Gomes back. Better hitter with worse defensive metrics than Gomes .263 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs in 99 games last year.

This has been beyond a doubt a very cold stove so far.

Have we signed anyone? We have allowed people to leave for sure but I have not seen any major signings. I know winter meetings are approaching but I hope we make a trade/sign what we have to.

The A’s, facing their usual payroll crunch, are discussing trades of reliever Blake Treinen, utilityman Jurickson Profar and catcher Josh Phegley, according to major-league sources.

All three players are non-tender candidates as they enter their final years of arbitration before reaching free agency.

If Treinen gets through waivers, any interest in trying to bring him back?

. On a minor league invite maybe.
Well that's not going to happen. He is an injury riddled season removed from one of the best seasons by a reliever in the last 20 years.

None of his injuries are structural and they indicate overuse. Simply getting time off and not being used as much as he was in Oakland should go a long way to him staying healthy.

If you want him here, it's pretty much gonna be in a MLB deal.

Villar was placed on waivers.

Wow. Baltimore gonna Baltimore

We were kicking around the idea of AssCabby coming back, but I'd rather have Villar at ~4 million AAV

I thought about Villar as well when we were discussing Mancini as a possible trade candidate. It's not like one of Villar's biggest downsides - his occasional brain-farts on the basepaths - would be something new for the Nats. His strikeout rate is also an issue, but that would be the case with some other potential FAs like Schoop. I assume that any team that might make a waiver claim would be on the hook for his projected $10+ million in arbitration? Is there another team with middle infield needs who might take a chance on him for that number?

Kind of ironic that Villar came up with the Astros during their rebuild, and became expendable after the 2015 season. Maybe it's a bit of "Baltimore gonna Houston" or some caricature thereof.

Yea, if you put in a waiver claim, you take the contract. Unless you negotiate something with the team in the trade. I dont get this move by the Orioles. Even with Davis, their projected payroll is around 60 million. If Villar duplicates what he did in 2019 (or comes relatively close), he'd be worth something at the 2020 deadline.

Villar's strikeout rate isnt any worse than Dozier. Like you said, his base running would fit right in. His defense is .... okay. Paired with Turner, I could see some issues. But offensively he'd be an improvement over Dozier.

Nice to see Gomes back. Him and Suzuki played well last year.

And I'd be all over Villar at 10m. We payed Dozier 9m and was a bench player at the end of the year.

24 HR, 73 RBI, 40 SB, .274 AVG, .339 OBP, .453 slugging.

And yet another guy to steal to go along with Turner and Robles..

Bring back two of Kendrick, Cabrerra and Adams to platoon with Zimmerman and we are set.

Yea, we cant pick up Villar at 10 million and still re-sign Zimmerman, Rendon, and Strasburg, and sign a reliever

stupid comparison.  Castro had 2 more years playing before age 29 than Jeter.

Brock Holt not a bad idea.

That makes a ton of sense.  Holt's offensive numbers were down a couple years ago due to a concussion that he was slow to come back from, but the versatility is terrific.  He would not embarrass himself if he played some 1st base, he could certainly hold 2d until Kieboom or Garcia is ready, and he plays pretty well in the OF.  He doesn't hit like a corner OF, but for depth he's not bad.  Best use would be as a super utility or 2d baseman.  Played with Rendon Rendon's freshman year at Rice. From Holt's wiki:
Quote
After transferring to Rice University in 2009, he posted a .348 batting average with 12 home runs and 43 RBIs in 59 games for the Rice Owls. He also led the Owls with 67 runs scored and shared the team lead with 11 stolen bases. In the same season, he was named both to the All-NCAA Regional Team and the All-Silver Glove Trophy Series team.[8]

not disappointed with bringing him back, but $5MM AAV starts might be more than I would have wanted to commit to Suzuki's partner.  I suppose the thought is that, between 2 old guys, we should have a healthy starter all year.   I'm not sure what this says about the Nats view of their catching depth in the minors.  Do they think Pineda can be ready for 2022?
