Bird is a guy that I would take on a minor-league deal to show me something in spring training but not someone I would guarantee anything to. He will get a shot with a bad team that can give him some cash because he's got upside. I doubt we could get him on a minors deal but we are one of the few contending teams that has a wide open spot at 1B, even with Zimm likely returning.
exactly what i meant. I think he will have nothing but minors deals. He hasnt played in 3 years basically.

What about local Chantilly/Geo Mason kid, Justin Bour. Big power and he always killed us when with the Marlins. He's a FA, no?

With the White Sox signing Grandal, they may now dangle James McCann, who is signed for 4.9 million in 2020.  We already have hooked up with them before for a big trade.  McCann would be a good and afforsable partner for Suzuki.
Other than the McCann name, there's nothing to hate about this.

He hit .226/.281/.413 in the second half. That's prett meh, even for a catcher. Hes basically a backup catcher

With a 26 man roster you can add Read for part of the time and let him play 50 games--basically three backup catchers.  I would rater see that than to overpay for another Matt Wieters or Gomes.  Send money on the pen.

Welp that decides it.  :hysterical:
His shoulder isnt what has been hurt the last 3 years. its been lower body things so you have no idea about his shoulder being done.

Rizzo can't keep Voth, Fedde and Ross without putting at least two of them into the pen (assuming we keep Strasburg).  Seems they are decent trade bait right now.  If we don't keep Strasburg, then figure Ross is our #4 and Voth is our #5.
OK, Ross is NOT and will never be a #4 starter.  Voth is the 5th starter.  Ross is an insurance policy if he's not out of options (sorry, I should know this).  If he is out of options, then it's goodbye to Joe.  Fedde is in the pen.

Sanchez is the #4 starter.  If Stras is gone (not what we want, but a possibility) then Corbin is the #2 starter, and a #3 starter needs to be acquired.

Dude.  It's not like these are freak injuries: he repeatedly hurts himself doing basic baseball activities.  Some guys just break down.  He's one of them.  FFS, he had a bruised ankle...and ended up needing surgery.  You say "it's been lower body things" like that's a good thing.  It's not.   He's like Nick Johnson or AJ Pollock except that those dudes actually produce when they play.  The only time Bird has managed to play more than 50 games in the majors (ever!), he hit .199 with no power and lost his job in the middle of the season.   His career OPS outside Yankee Stadium is .662 (Wilmer Difo's career OPS is .663).

Other than a 40-game stretch coming up on 5 years ago, there is no indication at all that Greg Bird is a major league baseball player.  If that 40-game stretch had happened with the Royals or Reds, he'd be playing for the Long Island Ducks next year if he was lucky.

Not sure what you expect for a platoon with Suzuki?  Less wear and tear likely will help him from having that 2nd half dip after an AS 1st half.  He's at least equal to Gomes, and half the cost.

Joe pitched well when he came up prior to his injury, and he pitched well down the stretch last year.  He deserves a shot as the #5 and has shown more than Voth.

I'd rather see us bring Gomes back on a cheaper deal.

But will he accept a cheaper one?

I think the biggest issue with our team is bullpen and 3rd base at this time.

Regardless of anything else, we need another starting-level catcher, Suzuki is 36 and can't be counted on for more than around 80 games a year (he caught 85 last year).

I can't imagine Gomes' .223 / .316 /.389 is going to be worth much more than $5 million, unless they decide that Read is capable of similar stats at league minimum.

here's some speculation that we trade for McCann:

MLBTR reports Arizona is open to trading former Nat Robbie Ray, seems like he'd be a "Rizzo guy" in case we don't keep Strasburg.  He's 28 and strikes a ton of people out.  And he's played now in Arizona so that will move him up on Rizzo's list. :). The one thing against him is that he's entering his final year of his deal.

Not just "seems like."  When Ray was drafted by the Nationals, it was by Rizzo. I remember seeing him at Potomac when he was just starting to figure it out.

Rizzo traded Ray in the Doug Fister deal.  He's basically a worse Gio...can't go deep into games.

I believe Gomes is worth $7mm.  Can't penny pinch on a quality platoon catcher.  Gomes is acceptable -- accept no imitations.
